Dear Church,
Labor Day began as an official holiday in the U.S. 130 years ago, as a way of recognizing the economic and social contributions of workers. It seems ironic to me that on a day called "labor day" we cease our labors! But I'll enjoy the holiday next Monday, as will you.
But do labors ever cease? People in our country are working well into their retirement years today; some because they want to, others because they have to. And in retirement, many find meaningful ways to use their gifts without being paid for it. I think President Jimmy Carter helped redefine retirement through the example of his tireless efforts with Habitat for Humanity. Pastor Keith Lentz would be another shining example, who - though he retired 13 years ago this month - continues to use his gifts among us, and will again this Sunday, by preaching at both worship services.
The concept of "doing nothing" after a life of work seems to be a myth. I love what Billy Graham once said regarding retirement: "I've studied the bible and I can't find one example of a prophet ever retiring!" It begs the question: Do we work to live, or do we live to work?
So, whatever you do to occupy your time these days - in an office, at a business, in the home, school or patrol car - whatever you do, do it well! And when the times come to rest, rest well.
See you in Church,
Pastor Steve
PS - I'm not taking vacation on Sunday! I'll be pleased to be preaching at Bay Lake Camp near Brainerd.

Rough Roof!
The roof repair is well underway...and good thing, too! Wet rotting insulation was found beneath the rubber membrane, and that insulation had to be replaced. When our roof is complete, the risk of rotting, leaks, and mold will be eliminated...for the next 30 years! Haven't had a chance to give to the roof yet? Pledge cards are available at the Welcome Desk.
