Burncoat Branch Opens!
The Worcester Public Library is excited to announce that the
Burncoat Branch, located at the Burncoat Street Preparatory School at 526 Burncoat Street, will be opening on Friday, April 1. Regular public hours will be Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. We hope to see you there!

National Library Week - April 10-16
The Worcester Public Library will observe National Library Week from April 10 to 16. The theme for this year is Libraries Transform! Your Library
will join libraries of all types in a national, unified effort to increase awareness of the changing role of libraries and the ways in which libraries are transforming to meet the digital and print information needs of their users.

This month we spoke with
Briyana, a teen patron who frequently visits the Worcester Public Library and the Teen Zone. She is a junior at Worcester Technical High School, and is an avid writer.
The Library is one of her favorite places to spend her time. "The Worcester Public Library has been a place to escape and get advice from friends, whether real of fictional," she said.
Briyana is currently writing her first novel, which she plans on finishing in the next five years. She is currently exploring multiple colleges, and is interested in majoring in Networking, with the hopes of becoming an IT professional, or an author.

Adult Programs & Classes 
The
Worcester Public Library will host its Second Annual
Local Author Fair & Bookfest on
Saturday, April 2 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event will allow patrons to meet local authors, and attend readings, signings and storytimes. The free event is open to all ages, and includes over 25 authors from all genres, who will be on hand to meet and greet. For more information and a complete schedule

There will also be three writing and publishing workshops held in the Banx Room during the event on
April 2.
How to Be a Freelance Writer with Ethan Gilsdorf will run from
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Now What? Getting into Print with Jennifer Freed will be held from
12:30 to 2 p.m.
Finally,
Introduction to Self-Publishing
with Diane Vanaskie Mulligan will run from
2 to 3:30 p.m.

During the months of April and May the Library will also host musical performances as part of
Worcester's Ethnic Mosaic 2016. On
Tuesday, April 19 from 6 to 7 p.m. the
Shirim Klezmer Orchestra will take you on a rollicking ride through the world of klezmer music.
The Jolly Beggars bring the rich tradition of Celtic fold music and storytelling to the library on
Saturday, April 23 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Finally, don't miss
Crocodile River Music and a hands-on drumming experience inspired by the music of Mali, West Africa on
Saturday, May 7 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
These three muscial events are programs administered by the Worcester Arts Council, for the Local Cultural Council - an agency supported by the Massachusetts Council, a state agency.

Teen Services - Main Library
This month in the Teen Zone you can join us for Book Cart Drill Team on Wednesday, April 6 from 5 to 6 p.m. Help us make an awesome video with choreographed dancing using book carts! The video will be entered in the Massachusetts Library Association contest and the winner - maybe us! - will receive a prize.
We'll also be running a
Book Spine Poetry How-to and Contest on
Saturday, April 9 from 1 to 2 p.m. Learn how to make your own poetry by creatively stacking books, then enter it in our poetry contest!

Action Art
on
Friday, April 1 from 3 to 5 p.m.
in the AV Room Learning Lab. You'll learn art skills - but you won't JUST be drawing! Paint a song, tap out a beat for a comic, use science to make your art even better - Action Art will bring in influences from all sorts of places to help you find new ways to make art!

Youth Services - Main Library
The Children's Room has a lot of fun things going on for the month of April and during school vacation week! In celebration of National Library Week: Libraries Transform patrons can visit the Caught Reading! Photo Booth from April 4-16. Take a selfie and if you get caught reading we'll post your picture to our Facebook page!
There are two events going on in honor of
Holocaust Remembrance
. The book
"Number the Stars"
will be discussed on
Wednesday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m.
and the movie
"Anne Frank's Diary"
will be shown
Wednesday, April 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Both events include a discussion.
Some super special events going on this week include the
Fun Literacy Magic Show by Pete and Chris Amusement
on
Thursday, April 21 at 2 p.m.
With over 15 years of entertaining experience, Pete and Chris bring the fun to you! Sponsored by the Friends of the Worcester Public Library.
You also won't want to miss our DIA Celebration! with award winning performers, Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell on Saturday, April 30 at 2 p.m. Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Children's Day, Book Day/Dia de los Niños, Dia de los Libros with Across the Americas: A Song & Story Celebration. This is a participatory program for families, and is funded, in part, by a grant from the Worcester Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

NEW! Sensory Bags 
The Worcester Public Library is happy to announce that Sensory Bags are now available at the Main Library and the Frances Perkins Branch Library. These bags are full of sensory toys, and are intended to create a comfortable environment for all our patrons. The bags are available to any child, adult, or caregiver who might benefit from these tools. Simply ask to borrow the bag at the Main Library Children's Help Desk or the Frances Perkins Branch desk.

When you need information fast, you can always call WPL at 508-799-1655, ext. 3. Through the Telephone Information Service, you can get answers to questions right from home or work. This service is available during library hours. Or maybe you're on the go and need an answer? Text your question to 508-335-2396 and get an answer delivered to your cell phone. This service, staffed by professional librarians, is also available during library hours.
Prefer email? Use this email form to submit a reference question that can be answered with a brief, factual answer. Remember: If you are requesting an obituary, you must provide the name of the deceased, the town in which he or she lived or died, and the exact date of the death (month, day and year). We will limit each submission to three questions or requests for obituaries.
