Summer Reading Program - "Build a Better World"

Children, teens and adults are invited to join us for Summer Reading 2017, "Build a Better World." The program runs June 23 to August 19, 2017Sign-ups begin June 1! Use your online log to keep track of time spent reading, listening to a book, or attending a library program. There are prizes and incentives for participants, with fun, exciting, and informative programs and classes all summer!

Don't forget to join us for the  Summer Reading Kickoff  at all branches on Friday, June 23 and at the Main Library on Saturday, June 24Check the events calendar for details.
Adult Programs & Classes

You won't want to miss our Summer Reading Kickoff Event  for Adults on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Main Library.  Register for the program and sign up for WPL Community Conversation Series  and/or summer classes. Discover library programs and services that are free for you and your family. Blackstone Valley Veggie Gardens will be onsite with samples and tips for growing summer salads and herbs. Start your summer with a trip to WPL!

If you're looking for a little learning this season check out our Summer Computer Class Series June  is Microsoft Office & Keyboarding Month!

Join us at Un-Common Cinema  for a screening of Birth of a Nation  followed by a lively discussion on Saturday, June 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.  This important work illustrates the life of Nat Turner, a slave who led a rebellion of slaves, rated R.

Looking to diversify or expand your business? Do you have a product or offer a service you can sell to the government? Gain a better understanding of SBA programs and services directly from representatives of the Small Business Administration and the City of Worcester. To learn how government contracting opportunities can help your business grow and succeed join us at Rock Your Business with Government Contracting on Tuesday, June 13 from 1 to 3 p.m.

There are many considerations to be made when seeking funding to support your non-profit organization. T h e Introduction to Finding Grants workshop on Tuesday, June 20 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. will provide an overview of the grant seeking process and provide a look at how to use the Foundation Directory online database.

Join staff of the Regional Environmental Council (REC) at Urban Gardening 101 on Monday, June 26 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The basics of starting your own garden will be presented, and you will learn about the many urban gardens and farming projects happening in the city.

Swing by for Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research on Wednesday, June 28 from 6 to 7 p.m. to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement. Use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. Presented by the Alzheimer's Association.

Teen Services - Main Library

This month there's plenty of exciting things to do in the Teen Zone as we gear up for the Summer Reading Program. First, join us for Teen Games Guild: Forbidden Island on Thursday, June 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. Teen Games Guild is back! Join us in the teen room for an afternoon of tabletop gaming. This month's showcase is Forbidden Island, a cooperative board game where the players race a sinking island as they attempt to find and escape with its archaeological treasures!

Make sure to swing by for the Summer Reading Kickoff on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can sign up for the Summer Reading Program and take part in all the fun stuff going on for all ages!

Next you won't want to miss the first of three summer escape rooms. Escape Room: The Mighty Pen will be held on Tuesday, June 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. Test out your sleuthing mettle with these dramatic games of deduction. We will lock you in, and you'll have 45 minutes to follow the clues and find the final key. You will be tasked with unraveling the mystery of a crate, which is the only remnant of the room's former life as a studio for many famous artists and writers. Do you have what it takes to escape the room?

During DIY Summer Spa come pamper yourself with homemade sugar scrubs and bath bombs! We'll provide everything you need to create a luxurious home spa experience, made for you, by you. This will be held on Thursday, June 29 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Finally we'll host FIFA Fridays beginning Friday, June 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. Fire up the library's Xbox One and join us for FIFA Fridays! We'll take turns duking it out on the soccer pitch in this popular video game.

Youth Services - Main Library

Sign-ups for the 2017 Summer Reading Program
"Build a Better World"  begin June 1! All ages can sign up for our program online or in the library. There will be plenty of fun activities to keep you busy this month until the program begins Friday, June 23. You also won't want to miss the Summer Reading Kickoff at the Main Library on Saturday, June 24, see below for more info.
 
We'll start the month off with Beatboxing on Monday, June 5 at 3:30 p.m. Come learn how to beatbox, for ages 6-12.  Countdown to Kindergarten  will be Wednesday, June 7 at 5:30 p.m. All children entering Kindergarten in 2017 are invited to join us for the fun.
 
WAMS World Drums will join us on Friday, June 16 from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Come celebrate the talent of Worcester Arts Magnet School's after-school drummers. Their drum circle in Afro-Caribbean tradition emphasizes mutual respect, the pursuit of excellence in musicianship, heroism and life, and the joy of rhythm.
 
School's Out Library Mini-Golf will be on Wednesday,  June 21 at 3:30 p.m. (for teens) and 4 p.m. (for kids). Celebrate the end of the school year with a round of mini-golf at the library! This program is brought to you by Mobile-Mini-Golf and is sponsored by the Friends of the Worcester Public Library. We'll also host a Pre-Summer Reading Kickoff Scavenger Hunt on Friday June 23 at 11 a.m. Search the Children's Room for clues about favorite books and summer activities!  Present your finished clue card and receive a small prize.
 
The 2017 Summer Reading Program "Build a Better World" KICKOFF EVENT at the Main Library will be on Saturday, June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign-up for summer reading and take part in fun activities for all, including glitter tattoos and a balloon artist.
 
Stop by for Beautiful Art! on Monday, June 26 at 2 p.m. Learn how one community transformed their neighborhood into a beautiful place through art, view local murals, and then paint your own canvas to brighten up your space!
 
We'll also have some ongoing programs throughout the summer beginning in July. As always we'll still have our favorite programs like Legos, Minecraft, and Paws to Read! Click here for all the details!
Branch Updates

Summer vacation will soon be here, so make sure you sign up for the Summer Reading Program and join us at any of our branches for our Summer Reading Kickoffs on Friday, June 23. We'll have lots of games and activities for the whole family to enjoy!

This month at the Burncoat Branch, Game On will continue on Tuesdays, Make and Take will be held every Wednesday, and Construction Club is on Thursdays. The Summer Reading Kickoff will be on Friday, June 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. and include balloon animals!

At the Goddard Branch, Make and Take will be every Thursday, and Construction Club runs on Tuesdays. The Summer Reading Kickoff is on Friday, June 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. and will include face painting.

The Roosevelt Branch has Game On every Friday, Make and Take on Tuesdays, and Construction Club on Wednesdays. The Summer Reading Kickoff will be Friday, June 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. and will include balloon animals.

The Tatnuck Magnet Branch has Make and Take on Thursdays, Construction Club on Tuesdays, and Game On every Wednesday. The Summer Reading Kickoff is Friday, June 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. and includes face painting.

The Frances Perkins Branch has a very busy June scheduled. In addition to the regular programs like Sensory Play, Legos, PJ Storytime, Family Storytime, Anime Club, and Cinema at the Library, you won't want to miss a few special additions. The Summer Reading Kickoff will be Friday, June 23 from 3 to 5 p.m. Register for summer reading during our kickoff carnival! There will be face painting and balloon animals!

We will also be building Fairy Houses on Wednesday, June 28 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Have fun creating your own amazing Fairy House in this wonderful program for all ages. Materials are provided but everyone is encouraged to bring your own special finds from the great outdoors! Please register to reserve your spot!

Finally, you won't want to miss the STEM Challenge: Straw Bridges on Friday, June 30 at 3 p.m. Learn how to make a bridge in this hands-on activity. Build and test your bridge's strength! The strongest bridge will get a small prize.

This summer at the Great Brook Valley Branch t he Summer Reading Kickoff will be Friday, June 23 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Stop in and sign-up for Summer Reading, and stay to play some games outside! Also coming this summer - Movies at the library! Check back soon for dates and times.
