Food for Fines

The Worcester Public Library is excited to introduce the Food for Fines program. For the month of December, the Library will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items at the Main Branch, 3 Salem Square, Worcester.

Each item will equal $1 removed from overdue fines. For full details click here. Collected food will be donated to the Worcester County Food Bank.
All-American Worcester 2017 Campaign

Join us as we build an application for the 2017 All-American City Award to recognize Worcester, and in particular, efforts to improve reading and summer learning for children across the city!

Adult Programs & Classes

The Worcester Public Library has just what you need to get through the cold winter months!

The Holiday Help Series will help you manage the stress of the season with some fun and invigorating activities! Join us for Healthy Holiday Baking on Saturday, December 3 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Taste and share recipes for healthy holiday treats. Register early as seating is limited.

Get your energy up with a Zumba Class on Saturday, December 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Got a to-do list to take care of this weekend? Start with this energizing Zumba class guaranteed to get you pumped for the day!

Finally, finish up with some Seasonal Crafting on Saturday, December 17 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Join us to create winter and holiday paper crafts, ideal for gift-giving, or to decorate your home. The Holiday Help Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Worcester Public Library.

Beginning this month join us for a City Services Q & A every Wednesday from 3 to 4 p.m. Get information on substance abuse treatment and recovery options, housing, human rights and other services available in Worcester. No appointment necessary, just drop by.

The library will also be hosting another CORI Sealing Workshops with EPOCA (Ex-Prisoners and Prisoners Organizing for Community Advancement) on Thursday, December 29 from 1 to 2 p.m. Learn how to seal your CORI and make the most of your job search.

To learn more about Genealogical Software Choices with Richard Reid, stop by on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. as the Worcester Chapter of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists, Inc. gathers for a business meeting, networking, and presentation.

Finally, you won't want to miss the Winter Reading Challenge for Adults! We'll help get you through the stormy months! Take our Winter Reading Challenge for Adults: log your reading in January and February to be eligible for a drawing to win a Kindle Paperwhite. For details visit mywpl.org later this month!

Teen Services - Main Library

There's some fun activities to help get you through the holiday season this month in the Teen Zone!

Swing by for Magical Microwaveable Mug Cakes! On Tuesday, December 13 from 4 to 5 p.m. You don't need an oven to bake yourself a cake! Join us in the teen room and we'll provide you with the ingredients and know-how you need to microwave a tasty treat!

Everyone's favorite, Masters of Minecraft will be held on Wednesdays, December 14 and 28 from 4 to 5 p.m. Did you know the library has it's very own Minecraft server? You can come play on it with us every other Wednesday! We've got parkour maps, adventure maps, open creative mode worlds and more, and you don't even have to have your own login to join in on the fun! It's the best hour ever because it's an hour of MINECRAFT!

The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) will meet on Tuesday, December 20 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Join us in the Teen Room at the Main Library for free food and the chance to shape the future of the Library's teen services. We want to hear from you - because this is your Library!

Finally, you won't want to miss Magic: The Gathering Casual Play on Wednesday, December 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Join us in the Teen Room for a Magic: The Gathering open, casual play event! Don't have a deck? Always wanted to try the game? We have 2 decks you can borrow for the program on a first come first served basis! Bust out your best cards and strategies and battle it out at WPL!

Youth Services - Main Library

December is full of exciting events! Be sure to swing by for school vacation week for some extra special programs!

Join us for our NEW Wreck the Teck TinkerLab on Tuesdays, December 6, 13, 20 & 27 at 4 p.m. Disassemble old computer towers, phones, remote controls, calculators, DVD players, and more. We can learn a lot about how things work by simply taking them apart and (maybe) putting them back together!

You're not gonna want to miss Santa Visits the Library on Friday, December 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. AND again on Friday, December 23 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. This Holiday Season we welcome Santa to our library for an exclusive appearance! His visit includes a dramatic read-aloud, traditional holiday caroling and his famous Santa Claus magic! Children will of course have the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus and take a wonderful photo (bring your own camera). Sponsored by Friends of Worcester Public Library.

Maker Mondays: Make & Take returns on Monday, December 12 at 4 p.m. Create a Mason Jar Gift: Decorate your own mason jar and mix together a sweet snack just in time for gift giving! The Learning Hub will also be back for a Science Lab on Mondays, December 5 & 19.

Gingerbread House Workshop will take place on Thursday, December 22 at 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Make your very own Gingerbread house using kits and lots of goodies. It might be messy but sweet. Sponsored by Friends of Worcester Public Library.

Join us for a Polar Express Night Event on Wednesday, December 28 at 6 p.m. Come in your pajamas and join in the fun as your Elf Librarians host a fun-filled evening adventure! Sponsored by Friends of Worcester Public Library.

The following day stop by for The Polar Express movie. The screening will be Thursday, December 29 at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

A crowd favorite, the Tanglewood Marionettes return with An Arabian Adventure on Tuesday, December 27 at 3 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. Sponsored by Friends of Worcester Public Library.

Finally, you won't want to miss New Year's Eve for Little Ones on Friday, December 30 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Youth Services request the honor of your presence at their 2nd Annual New Year's Eve Celebration for young children. Children 6 and under are invited to experience a countdown to 2017, photo ops and photo frames, noisemakers and hats, refreshments, and of course lots of dancing. Please sign-up with a grown-up. Space is limited. Sponsored by Friends of Worcester Public Library.

Branch Updates

The One City, One Library branches have lots of your favorite programs going on this month, with a couple special events for the holiday season!

At the Burncoat Branch, Construction Club continues on Thursdays. Game On will take place on Tuesdays, and Make and Take will run on Wednesdays, December 7, 14 & 28. Don't miss Gingerbread House Decorating on Wednesday, December 21 from 4 to 5 p.m. Get into the holiday spirit with Gingerbread House Decorating! Engineer your gingerbread house and also make it a piece of yummy art! Click here for more info.

At the Goddard Branch, Make and Take continues on Thursdays, and  Construction Club will be Tuesdays. Join us for   Cookie Decorating on Wednesday, December 14 from 4 to 5 p.m. Let's decorate some cookies! We'll have lots of supplies so you can create your masterpiece - and then we'll eat them, of course! All ages welcome. Finally, you won't want to miss a Visit from Santa on Thursday, December 15 from 4 to 5 p.m. Come to the library and get in the spirit with a Santa craft, music and fun! Freegal offers access to about 3 million songs, including Sony Music's catalog of legendary artists.  Download up to four singles per month for your listening satisfaction.

OneClick Digital is your go-to spot for for e-audiobooks, with over 2600 titles available!

Hoopla offers movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks, comics and TV shows to enjoy on your computer, tablet, phone or TV. Titles can be streamed immediately, or downloaded to phones or tablets for offline enjoyment later. There are hundreds of thousands of titles to choose from, with more being added daily.

Reminders

Please note: The Worcester Public Library and all Branches will be closed Saturday, December 24 through Monday, December 26  in observance of Christmas Day .

The Library and all Branches will also be closed on Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2 in observance of New Year's Day.

The One City, One Library branches will also be closed on Saturday, December 31.
