The Clothesline Project is a powerful witness of the violence many live with. It provides a healing outlet for those who were forcibly silenced. Its goal is to raise awareness and stir the viewers to action in an effort to end the epidemic of violence.

Utah Women & Education Forum

October 27, 2015 (3:30-5:00 p.m.)
Library Lecture Hall (LI 120), Utah Valley University
Speaker
Dr. Susan R. Madsen
Director, Utah Women & Education Initiative Professor of Leadership & Ethics, Woodbury School of Business

Why are many young women in Utah not attending college and completing degrees and certificates? This presentation will highlight many of the influences found to shape and impact these decisions. Dr. Madsen will share some key findings from an extensive statewide study conducted by Utah Women & Education Project researchers, many of which relate to assisting boys and men as well. She will also provide recommendations on what we can do to help move the needle for women in Utah. This information is powerful for anyone who influences girls and women within our state. The forum will conclude with light refreshments, giving attendees the opportunity to discuss ideas on how to help more girls and women understand the importance of college graduation. Come, listen, ask questions, and learn!

Utah Women's Walk
Maxine Conder
Retired Rear Admiral and Director of Navy Nurse Corps

Maxine Conder vividly remembers December 7, 1941, a day that changed not only the world's history, at 15 years old it changed her own quiet life.  Living in Tooele near the Army Depot, her small town was thrown, quite literally, into World War II.  Nearly everyone Maxine knew was involved in the war effort to some degree.  Many of her male friends joined the service and left in early January 1942 or right after graduation in May of that year.  Only a few years later Maxine, quite by accident joined the "regular" Navy after being trained as a nurse through a Navy program.  That single decision set her on a life course that was unimaginable!  Over the next 28 years she furthered her education in nursing, served literally around the world, and was promoted within the ranks of the Navy unprecedented by women prior to this time.  Eventually Maxine was advanced to the rank of Rear Admiral and Director of Navy Nurse Corps.  As Admiral, she oversaw 2,600 Navy nurses worldwide with additional responsibilities of recruiting, training, promoting and retraining them.  As Admiral during peace time, she grasped the opportunity to provide career ladders for naval nurses, changing the requirements for them to achieve the rank of captain, a tremendous benefit in nursing rank advancement.  Retired Admiral Maxine Condor's legacy to women includes the counsel to work hard and take opportunities that are unexpected.  Like Maxine Conder, you will only find out where they will lead you when you walk through opportunity's door.
