Greetings from the WSIB Chair Elizabeth Witmer
|
Welcome to the first edition of our new eNewsletter,
WSIB@WORK,
your seasonal source of how the WSIB is working for you! Take this issue for example, where you can learn about our recent Day of Mourning event, or our current Rate Framework Consultations. My personal favourite, though, is a video of Anthony, a brave man who shares his inspiring story of being supported by Sharon, one of our Work Transition Specialists, after an unfortunate workplace injury. As the way we work evolves, we want to ensure that you're with us. I hope that you enjoy

#PracticeSafeWork This Summer!
|
We want to show young workers that it pays to work safe. So we're giving them the opportunity to showcase their health and safety knowledge in our first-ever Twitter contest! We're asking young workers to take a photo of how they practice safety on the job, and tag it with #PracticeSafeWork on Twitter for a chance to win daily and weekly cash prizes! The contest runs until September 2.

Rate Framework Modernization: We Want to Hear from You!
|
We're always looking for ways to improve our system, and that's exactly what our Rate Framework Modernization is about. The current employer classification and premium rate setting approach is out-of-date, so we're proposing a preliminary Rate Framework as a starting point for consultation. It's a plausible working model to ensure that everyone pays their fair share for workplace coverage.
On our website we have an executive summary, video, and presentation designed to help you understand what is being proposed. Plus, we have a series of technical papers and Q&A which provide a deeper level of analysis for your consideration. We want to hear from you! The deadline for submissions to the Rate Framework Modernization Consultation is October 2, 2015. For more info

Day of Mourning: April 28, 2015
|
On April 28, 2015, we commemorated the
National Day of Mourning
at a public ceremony which drew more than 100 people to Simcoe Park. Elizabeth Witmer, Chair of the WSIB was accompanied by Premier Kathleen Wynne, the Honourable Kevin Flynn, Minister of Labour, and MPPs from each party as we remembered and honoured those workers who have died, been injured, or suffered illness in the workplace. Luke Penny, who was killed at work in 2010, was remembered at the ceremony by his mother who gave remarks and laid a wreath in his honour. St. Michael's Choir School participated in the ceremony and we screened our touching
Day of Mourning Video
.
Overall, The Day of Mourning served as a meaningful tribute and opportunity to renew our commitment to the promotion of healthy and safe workplaces and the prevention of future fatalities.

Faster, easier, and more efficient. These are the driving forces for why, over the last several years, we've grown a
suite of online services for employers
. And to help businesses take advantage of these services, we have a team of Customer Liaison Specialists dedicated to helping you learn more about doing business with the WSIB online. We offer presentations to anyone in your organization who deals with the WSIB, whether they are reporting premiums, making payments, creating clearances or completing an Employer Report of Injury or Illness (Form 7) online. Want to discover which services would be of use to you or your team? Wondering how to register for services? Need help setting up permissions and account settings? These are the answers that you can get in a one hour online or in person session with one of our Customer Liaison Specialists. For more information, please contact the team at

Monthly Statement Makeover: Technology to Serve You Better
|
Schedule 1 employers: your monthly statements have gotten a much-needed makeover, thanks to major efforts to modernize technology at the WSIB. An ongoing project, Accounts and Claims Enterprise System, known as "ACES," is replacing multiple end-of-life systems with one new integrated system for administering employer accounts and managing claims. This means that staff now have faster access to account information, enabling them to provide better service to employers on the phone. Schedule 1 employers may have noticed a new "look and feel" to their Statement of Account, similar to the improvements we made last year to the Schedule 2 Statement of Account. Information about the new Statement is available
here.

Anthony's Story
In 2008, while working as a lead hand brake press operator, 45-year-old Anthony suffered a permanent injury to his right knee that prevented him from being able to go back to his pre-accident job. He was referred to WSIB's former Labour Market Re-entry (LMR) program, but was unsuccessful due to personal issues and his belief that his abilities did not match the requirements of the job selected. His inability to complete the program left him feeling depressed, apathetic, and hopeless. "The time immediately following the accident was awful," said Anthony. Then, he met Sharon, a WSIB Work Transition Specialist (WTS). Watch what happened.
