Dear WSMS Parents and Guardians,

Next week will be a very busy week for our students and staff. Our 7th and 8th graders will be taking the STAAR tests on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please see below for more details on the testing schedule.

Our 7th and 8th grade teachers and students have done an excellent job preparing for these assessments; I am confident that they will do well. Students will be testing from 8:55 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.  As always, it is recommended that students get a good 8 hours of sleep and eat a hearty breakfast in the morning before they come to school. If possible, please do not take your son or daughter out of school for doctor appointments on Tuesday and/or Wednesday.

During all STAAR testing days, parents will have limited access to the campus due to testing security.  Parents and/or family members will not be able to deliver lunch to students, or eat lunch with students, during STAAR testing days.  Thank you for your support in helping us create a great testing environment for our students.

Sincerely,
Principal

WSMS Color Guard Performance - Tonight!
On March 11, the WSMS Color Guard traveled to Fort Worth, to compete at the North Texas Color Guard Association's Cadet Class State Championships! The team put on a great show against some very competitive middle school teams from across DFW. The kids ended the night in third place and received the Bronze Medal! This was the first year putting out a competitive team. The WSMS Color Guard did an amazing job all season and represented WSMS with pride and class. I am so proud of them!

Their 2017 Show is titled: You're an M&M and it is a high energy, fun and challenging routine inspired by our favorite bite sized candies that melt in your mouth, not in your hand!

The WSMS Color Guard will be performing this Thursday at the first ever Lovejoy ISD Color Guard Showcase at the LHS Gym at 7:30 pm. Admission is free to watch, so come out and see what the team is all about!

WSMS Students Showcased at the Lovejoy High School Art Gallery - Through April 7
T he Lovejoy High School Art Gallery is a showcase of how our young artists represent themselves and others through portraiture. The concept of identity, both through representation and abstraction, is a core thread in every Lovejoy art studio, and is explored through a plethora of media and art forms. This exhibition celebrates the range of approaches used to explore identity at all age levels and is a spectacular body of work to begin the tradition of a yearly Portrait Show.

The Gallery is open daily during school hours from now through April 7.
Please help us congratulate our talented Lovejoy artists that will be representing Willow Springs at the high school gallery.

WSMS PTA Annual Meeting and Parent Program - Tuesday, April 4
Join us for a special screening of Screenagers - Growing up in the Digital Age. The WSMS PTA Annual Meeting will occur on April 4, 2017 at 11:00am and the screening will immediately follow. The students will also see part of the movie on April 7th with a presentation by the school on using technology wisely.

More about Screenagers:
Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time-friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Fantastic Fossils! Tuesday, April 11
Join John S. Mead -- passionate Biology Teacher, Origins Explorer, and Nature Photographer -- as he takes us through his exciting participation in Dr. Lee Berger's excavation of a new human species, Homo naledi, from the Rising Star Cave in South Africa. This species of human ancestor is believed to be 900,000 to 2 million years old and was an incredible find. The discovery of Homo naledi is featured on the October 2015 cover of National Geographic Magazine, and in a current exhibit at the Perot Museum. Mr. Mead will share stories about the discovery, as well as his outstanding photos. This event is sponsored by the Lovejoy Gifted Association (LGA). LGA members and families may attend free. All middle school and high school students may attend the event for free with a current student ID. There is a $5 admission fee for adults who are not LGA members.
