WTA's International Business Series:
Hot Topics in Trade Update

The one constant in international trade is change and MMAC's World Trade Association does its best to keep members current on regulations. On Thursday, October 20, Husch Blackwell hosted WTA's "Hot Topics in Trade," where Jennifer Jin of Husch Blackwell, Paul Eversman of Associated Bank and Brian Bourke of SEKO Logistics dissected three current issues impacting global trade.
Trans-Pacific Partnership
Projected economic trends
SOLAS
(Safety of Life at Sea)
Jennifer Jin explained how the world's largest free trade agreement, Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), affects the United States; and more specifically, how it affects Wisconsin's economy. $12.6 billion of Wisconsin goods are exported to TPP countries a year. With such a large economic and strategic impact, government officials and trade experts stress the importance for increased transparency and standardization.
Paul Eversman projected economic trends for each major U.S. trading partner and identified how cultural and political factors can lead to financial instability. Because most international markets run 24/7, fluctuations result in real-time economic shifts.
Brian Bourke deflated a lot of the hype surrounding SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) and illustrated how miscommunication between the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and ports resulted in "much to do about nothing." The goal of the SOLAS was to protect people at sea and prevent loss of life; however, the regulation fell short due to lack of oversight on weight requirements and clear enforcement protocols.
