The Gateway to Extraordinary Possibilities
Welcome Back to School!
WE’RE BACK! Schools and neighborhoods throughout West Sacramento are buzzing with activity once more as we have officially kicked off another exciting school year in the Washington Unified School District (WUSD).

The first day got off to a flying start at Riverbank Elementary School with a “red carpet rollout” featuring special guests Good Day Sacramento helping us welcome students, families, and staff back to school.

Thank you to all the hard-working staff at Riverbank Elementary for being amazing hosts and sharing your energy with our community!

To get caught up on that morning’s action please watch the recording on YouTube or  view the photos on the official WUSD Facebook page.

On behalf of the entire WUSD family we would like to wish ALL our students, families, and staff a successful and exciting school year!  #Great2bWUSD
Community Updates...
Welcome Back Breakfast & Spirit Rally - On August 13th and 14th the WUSD hosted the annual welcome back breakfasts and spirit rallies for both our certificated and classified employees. All employees were treated to delicious breakfast burrito bars courtesy of our stellar food services staff. Following the amazing breakfast, school sites, and department teams participated in a spirit rally. Each team was tasked with selecting a song that best represented their team’s identity and were given 30 seconds to showcase their team spirit heading into the new school year. Superintendent Luna capped off both mornings by speaking to both groups providing an inspirational welcome back message.

Please join us in congratulating Stonegate Elementary and the Food Services Department on being crowned this year’s Spirit Rally Champions! The champions get to showcase the spirit trophy on their campus and in their department for the entire year!
National Night Out - On August 7th, the Washington Unified Board of Trustees joined the amazing team at the West Sacramento Police Department as they hosted this year’s National Night Out in West Sacramento.

National Night Out is an annual community-building event that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. The WUSD team rode on a school bus and was part of a caravan of community partners visiting community hosted block parties throughout the city.

We always look forward to this event and enjoy seeing many of our students and families enjoying the excitement prior to the school year starting!
New Educator Orientation - As we prepared to launch the 2018-19 school year, the newest team of Washington Unified super teachers participated in their comprehensive two-day orientation process.

The workshop provided helpful information from various WUSD departments, the West Sacramento Teachers Association, and the much anticipated district-wide bus tour courtesy of the best tour guide in town and WUSD All-star, Christy Jourdan, as well as the best-dressed bus driver in town and Transportation Supervisor, Nate Hill.

Where else can you see ALL your district schools, get a personalized city-wide tour, receive free doughnut holes, and be treated to mini welcome parties by all our amazing and dedicated school site staff in two hours?! That's right, only in the WUSD!

View the photos and please join us in welcoming the newest generation of teachers to the WUSD family!
Back to School Resource Fair - This year's Back to School Supply Drive and Resource Fair was held on August 11, 2018.

This annual event is hosted by the  Yolo County Children's Alliance (YCCA) in close collaboration with the WUSD and various community partners to distribute backpacks filled with school supplies as well as other supports in the form of hygiene kits and bikes to school-aged children.

The event took place at the YCCA Family Resource Center on the Bryte CCT campus benefiting hundreds of children and families in our community. Thank you to all who made this opportunity possible!
Future Ready - On August 24th at River City High we joined some of our amazing community partners as AT&T presented a donation of $20,000 from its Aspire Initiative to the West Sacramento Foundation in support of the Future Ready Program.

The Future Ready program is a collaborative effort between Washington Unified, the City of West Sacramento, and the West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce to help WUSD juniors and seniors in career technical education pathways pursue summer internships in their fields of interest and showcase their skills through digital badging.

We were thrilled to spend the morning with our partners and are anxiously awaiting to see the new doors that will open for our hard-working students as a result of this continued support!
California Voting Rights Act - At the April 12, 2018 WUSD Board Meeting, the Board of Trustees approved  Resolution No. 1718-22 indicating their intent to transition Board elections from at-large to by-trustee area elections by the November 2020 election. The transition will not affect the current November 2018 elections however, the Board is now in the process of drafting the trustee area maps, with the goal of adopting maps in September 2018.

The role of the CBOC is to review the activity of the Bond funds and report to the public. A presentation of the annual report can be presented to the WUSD Board of Education if the CBOC chooses; however, presenting the Report is completely optional.
