CONNECT • COLLABORATE • COMMUNICATE

Join us for a big round of applause congratulating everyone who participated in the December 14 Winter Concert held at the WUSD District Office. It was a packed house in the multipurpose room featuring our very talented students from the RCHS Big Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and a huge collaboration of students from the Bridgeway Island / Stonegate bands. The show featured a grand finale with ALL the students on stage and circling the room. Let’s also give a big shout out to our amazing teacher Tony Marvelli, RCHS and Delores Henson, Bridgeway / Stonegate.
On December 13th Southport Elementary School hosted its Business Day activities today in cafeteria. Students were tasked with creating their own mini business concepts, designing a product and plan to sell it to other classmates and visitors. We had a great time visiting with kids and learning about their designs. And please rest assured, only #MallardBucks were exchanged throughout this exercise! Great job Ducks!
December 14th also featured a very memorable occasion in our school district, the 1st Annual West Sacramento FFA Chapter Awards Banquet. FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education. FFA remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Please join us in congratulating these students who have gained valuable experience in public speaking and knowledge of FFA.
The Bayer Corporation visited Westmore Oaks Elementary for a morning of STEM activities. Bayer has been working with Westmore Oaks teacher Jennifer Garcia to organize an opportunity for two classes of 8th grade students to participate in a program called Making Science Make Sense . Created by Bayer, Making Science Makes Sense is a program that supports teachers with STEM learning by offering support to conduct hands-on learning opportunities for students.  The Bayer employees assisted students with three science experiments (Strawberry DNA Extraction, Balloon Skewers and Dry Ice Bubbles)!
Elkhorn AVID class of 2018 visits the CSU-Maritime Academy . AVID has made great strides at Elkhorn Village Elementary not only in each of the three grade level elective classes, but across the entire 6th-8th grade and into 4th and 5th grade. Elkhorn is also very proud to be the only AVID-certified school in our school district!
Congratulations to Shawn Shivers, a junior at River City High School for applying and being selected to play Men’s Basketball in Barcelona in the summer of 2017 through a program called STUDENTathleteWord. STUDENTathleteWorld Tours provides opportunities for high character student athletes and their families to travel the world and represent their country playing the sport they love. The program combines the thrill of international athletic competition with the adventure and leadership benefits of international travel. Not only is Shawn representing West Sacramento but also the USA. If you would like to help send Shawn to Barcelona visit his Go Fund Me page: “Send Shawn to Barcelona.”
From Westfield Village—please join us giving a heartfelt thank you to our district staff for coming out to support Westfield students through their administrative mentorship program! The kids are so appreciative of the time and attention they receive from the visiting staff who have made a wonderful impact in their lives this year. In the photos we have Nate Hill, Transportation Supervisor with Miguel and Kilee Lane, Director of Fiscal Services with Alivia. Not pictured here, is our Director of Facilities, Planning and Construction Kevin Sanders with Valentino. The students and staff at Westfield appreciate the time and attention you are providing to the students! #Great2bWUSD
