Statewide Lawsuit Affects Release of Student Data
|

We want to make you aware of news regarding a recent statewide lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE) which will have a significant impact on all California school districts.
In April 2012, two organizations, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association (the plaintiffs), filed a lawsuit against the CDE alleging widespread, systemic non-compliance by local educational agencies with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The suit also alleges that the CDE fails to monitor, investigate, and correct such non-compliance in accordance with the law. On February 25th and 26th Jennifer Garcia's 8th grade GATE students at Westmore Oaks Elementary assembled Solar Suitcases for We Share Solar with help from the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE). The Solar Suitcase is an easy-to-use, easy-to-transport, plug and play, complete solar electric system that will provide power for a variety of uses. They will shipped to schools in the Philippines to provide light and serve as charging stations. Ms. Garcia was trained at the YCOE along with two other WUSD teachers on how to build the suitcases.

River City High School senior Jaylen Crim signs letter of intent to play soccer at St. Mary's!
Out of a somewhat reserved high school senior, come extreme talent and force on the soccer field. On February 3rd the varsity soccer forward signed off for St. Mary's where she is given a full ride scholarship to continue improving her game.

On Saturday, February 20th Elkhorn Village Elementary School hosted its 2nd Annual Math Competition! The event was open to all Elkhorn Village K-8 students. They competed individually on a grade level math test with the option of participating in a team test. Students opting out of the team test had STEM-related activities to participate in. Elkhorn adopted this model from MESA Math Competitions their MESA advisors and students attended in the past. It was amazing to see all the participants!

On February 9th, approximately 40 students from the Bryte Culinary Arts and Farm to Fork Education (CAFFE) program attended a field trip to theFiery Ginger Farm and had a blast! This is the farm located behind Yolo Education Center.
Both the teachers and the students learned so much including how to sterilize planting trays, make the planting mix, and plant seeds. Students also participated in a race to plant lettuce seedlings. Finally, students learned how to harvest and pack lettuce. The day was capped off with lunch for all the students courtesy of Raley’s.

Special shout out and BIG THANKS to all our Washington Unified School District
parents, staff and school site teams that came out on February 11 for the LCAP Parent Advisory Committee meeting. It was great seeing many of the same faces and some new additions to the team. Looking forward to the next meeting and building on the day's momentum. Stay tuned for updates!

Mathletes competitions take place every 2nd Thursday of each month at a school from the region. An average of 23 schools gather to compete in five subjects including, Arithmetic, Trigonometry, Geometry, Algebra, and Group/Problem Solving. Check out the

The Big West Conference conducted this feature on
Katelin King, RC Class of 2013. She played guard for years on varsity while attending RCHS before moving on to play basketball at
CSU Northridge. A serious injury derailed her plans for a year and almost ended her career but she persevered.

The First Annual Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE) African American Leadership Conference was held on Saturday, February 6th in West Sacramento. Approximately 60 students from WUSD participated in workshops dealing with higher education, entrepreneurship, college admissions process, and putting their best effort forward in all aspects of life. It was topped off with an academic and participation awards ceremony, keynote speaker, open mic, singing, southern food, poetry, and vendors. Thanks to YCOE for hosting a great event!

The WUSD Career Technical Education (CTE) Department offers pathways in 9 career areas
preparing students for future success by providing them with industry-specific knowledge and skills critical for successful employment in a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, and high-demand careers. A very cool event for all of our families to take note of. If you love video, PC, and mobile games and are interested in seeing how the industry is thriving in the greater Sacramento region then mark your calendars and visit the Sacramento Indie Arcade Gaming Expo hosted on April 9th at the West Sacramento Community Center!
Sac Indie Arcade is also encouraging kids in WUSD who have created their own video game related fan art to contact them via email and submit their art work for display! You can reach via Facebook, Twitter or the Web site.

Be a part of the first ever Aspiring Administrators Academy whose purpose is to empower and support the next generation of high quality instructional leaders dedicated to serving WUSD students. The Academy is designed to build the internal capacity of WUSD teacher-leaders while providing an opportunity to explore the knowledge, skills, and characteristics necessary to prepare for administrative positions.

It’s almost that time of year again! Millions of students nationwide will pick up a book and set Seuss on the loose in honor of the NEA’s 19th Read Across America Day reading celebration and Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2. This year’s featured book is Dr. Seuss’ recently released What Pet Should I Get. Call your local school and ask what they have scheduled so you can be a part of the celebration!

Come learn more about what happens in our schools including Technology, Community Partnerships, New Math Materials, Athletics, Arts Programs and more.
