On Friday, May 20th, the Sacramento City College's West Sacramento Center together with the Yolo County Office of Education and Washington Unified School District hosted approximately 90 Stonegate Elementary kindergarten students participating in the 2nd Annual Kinders to go College event. The event is focused on creating a positive pipeline between our youngest learners and college—engaging children at an early age and peaking their interest in a variety options that they can pursue as part of their educational journey. Students experienced a number of special college “classes” (15 minute workshops) in fields such as dental assisting and hygiene, nursing, art, personal finance, robotics, West Sacramento Police and Fire Departments.
“Kinders go to College is a perfect example of the commitment and investment we need to make in our children’s futures,” said Linda C. Luna, WUSD Superintendent. “The best way to help our kids be successful is to communicate to them early in their educational journey, giving them some sense that their education has purpose.” Read more...

Join us in giving a BIG THANK YOU to the West Sacramento Rotary Club, RCHS Interact Club, Broderick Community members, RCHS Service Learning Students, WUSD School Board Member Norma Alcala, and RCHS Principal Stan Mojsich for their hard work and dedication in building the new garden boxes at the Bryte Career and College Training campus. The project was a great community collaboration to create a new opportunity for our young people to learn more about what it takes to grow their own healthy and nutritious food. On April 30, 2016 the River City High School choirs performed at the 61st Annual Golden Empire Music Festival held at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). The Advanced Vocal Ensemble received straight "Excellent" ratings and the Concert Choir received two "Superior" ratings and an "Excellent!" Please join us in congratulating these fine young singers on a job well done!

Southport Elementary is proud to announce that two of its students are winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Messages of Peace Contest held in Atlanta, Georgia. There were 27 winning messages in all and they will be displayed in the Martin Luther King Jr. National Park where over 7,000 visitors will read their poems annually. In total, 2,000 poems were entered from 11 different countries. The student winners representing Southport Elementary are 2nd grader, Eve Wambar, and 6th grader, Ximena Alcantar.

C-STEM DAY 2016 - Ms. Schoellhamer's C-STEM students were back at UC Davis on May 21st competing in the annual coding and programming competition. Teams comprised of 4-5 players competing against several other Northern California schools to see who is most skilled with their robots; many students who started at Bridgeway Island Elementary have continued on to successfully compete on the RCHS teams, who were also present at the competition. Congratulations to our students: Brobots, Robot Ninjas, 7th Grade Superstars, The Coding Giraffes, Sab-Bot-age, and The Running Bot!

On April 11th and 12th our Construction Pathway students participated in the Jim Lambert Design/Build Shed Competition sponsored by the Sacramento Regional Builders Exchange at Consumes River College. They were given supplies of wood and nails and had 2 days to build a shed from the ground up. They worked tirelessly for 2 days under the supervision of their NCCT teacher, Jason Billington, and as a team and were able to complete the job with time to spare! The shed will now be placed at the Bryte Career and College Training campus for the new Farm to Fork Pathway students to use for their gardening supplies!

Join us in congratulating this year's Bridgeway-Stonegate Concert Band on yet another great performance, and a big thank you to Delores Henson who does an amazing job teaching our students to love music. On Saturday, May 7th, the Concert Band students participated in Music in the Parks. Two years ago, they placed 3rd; last year, they placed 2nd; and, this year as you may have guessed, they placed 1st! Job well done on a successful year!

On May 4th Bridgeway Island Elementary hosted a bike train to celebrate
National Bike to School Day! Teachers, staff, students and their families were invited to meet at a nearby park and bike and walk into school. Good Day Sacramento was on-hand for fun interviews, and the River Cats mascot, Dinger, joined the bike train while West Sac Police helped to safely lead the convoy to school. Participants were also greeted at school by Scooter the
SpareTheAir.com dog and received "swag bags" with goodies to promote exercise and healthy living.

On May 20th the RCHS Wind Ensemble took the stage at the Robert Mondavi Center performing their concert set from the spring term. The student performance was part of the California Music Educators Association (CMEA) festival. The group received a Unanimous Superior rating from the judges who—about the highest mark obtainable in their category. Congratulations to Band Director, Tony Marvelli and his students who have demonstrated a high level of determination and professionalism throughout their RCHS music careers! On May 19th students representing Washington Unified School District received special awards at the
2016 Sixth Senate District Annual Graduation Recognition Event hosted at the State Capitol Building. These students exemplify extraordinary achievements in a variety of areas, excelling not only in academics, but also in community service, music and art, student body leadership, and sports. Many thanks to Senator Dr. Richard Pan, Assemblymember Ken Cooley, Assemblymember Jim Cooper and Assemblymember Kevin McCarty for putting on a great event!

Also performing at the 61st Annual Golden Empire Music Festival on April 30th was the River City High School Orchestra which has returned as a performing ensemble after more than twenty years on hiatus. These talented and dedicated students have been playing their instruments for only a few months before taking the stage at CSUS. Congratulations on a major milestone and keep up the hard work!

We would like to give a very special shout out to Bayer Crop-Science who gave a generous donation to Yolo Farm to Fork at their Open House on Tuesday, May 17, 2016. Yolo Farm to Fork is a non-profit organization that the West Sacramento School Gardens Network works with to support school gardens throughout Yolo County. The $5,000 donation will be used specifically to help our West Sacramento schools bring fresh vegetables from their school gardens into their cafeterias.

On Saturday May 21, the RCHS Robotics Engineering and Programming Club students participated in the 2016 C-STEM Day Robo-Play Challenge. This year’s challenge had 120 participating teams from both Northern and Southern California. RCHS received 3rd place in the Division 2 Robo-Play Regional Competition. Additionally, the teams received the “Spirit Award” from the judges for their extraordinary display of enthusiasm, leadership skills, collaboration and their positive attitude during the competition. Four individual students received the "Award of Excellence" for their demonstrated excellent performance on computing and its applications in STEM subjects. Congratulations to Mollary Snarr, Lan Nyugen, Xyrex Buss, Lauren Dela Rosa, Adam Miller, Leticia Diaz, Tatiana Nikolaeva, German Gonzalez, Jagjit Sign, Flora Cox, Jose Garcia, Bryan Barrera, Angel Solis, Dylan Brown, Daniel Monteros, Maia Dua, Kelly Riedel, Jason Makeyenko.

Please join us in recognizing and thanking Herb and Linda Yip for their efforts to further our student's education with their tireless contributions. Mr. and Mrs. Yip have been running the Recycling for Education Scholarship Program since 2003 and this will be the final year of operation. This fund has assisted at approximately 150 Washington Unified School District high school graduates with their college tuition over the last thirteen years. The Yip family has devoted many hours to collecting and processing the recycling of the school district's printer toners, bottles, and cans in order to help fund the program, sometimes working 16 hour days, 5 days a week. Their efforts have made a significant impact in the lives of our students and in the broader community. THANK YOU!

The WUSD Instructional Leadership Corps (ILC) Team Expands for 2016-17 School Year. On May 9, 2016, Jenna Raski, 3rd Grade Teacher at Stonegate Elementary and Cohort 1 member of our Innovative Educator program, was accepted as a member of the
Instructional Leadership Corps (ILC), a collaborative partnership among the California Teachers Association, the Stanford Center for Opportunity Policy in Education, and the National Board Resource Center at Stanford. Jenna will be collaborating with current WUSD ILC members, Melissa Oliver and Kim Harrison for Year 3 of the ILC project. Her planning and collaboration work will begin at the ILC Summer Regional Conference in July.

Southport Teacher named Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified Educator 2015-16. Sally DeLaMora, 2nd grade Teacher at Southport Elementary and a pilot member of the WUSD Innovative Educator program, was named a
Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified Educator for 15-16. Sally completed a rigorous application progress that documented her ongoing commitment to teaching and promotion of digital citizenship with her students and her larger school community. Her name will soon be included in the list of Digital Citizenship Certified Educators on the Common Sense Media Website and she earns a digital badge that proudly displays her devotion to teaching our students how to be safe, responsible, and respectable digital citizens.

. In March we sent a district-wide invitation to ALL schools inviting 6-12 grade students to enter a logo design contest. The redesign of the district logo is a part of the larger
Strategic Planning process
our district is pursuing which involves re-branding our district with an emphasis on 21st century standards, creating a refined, high-quality and professional presence for our organization while engaging our community to be involved in the process. Lastly, we want to inform you that you can also expect to see the progress we are making with the strategic plan unveiled at the start of the new school year together with a completely redesigned WUSD website!

Fiery Ginger Farm is taking applications for their summer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. In exchange for directly supporting the farm you will receive a weekly box of naturally-grown produce! Not only do WUSD students help out on the farm and gain hands-on learning experiences but $5 from every box of produce will go back to a WUSD school program. Learn more about the

The
Growing Green Internship is a workforce development program. Each piece of the program is planned to set students up for future success in college and careers. High school and college aged interns engage in job skills training, resume building, paid work experience, career exploration, community service and education in agriculture and environmental stewardship. Interns work on a variety of projects, meet professional mentors and get involved in their community. Following the summer work program, interns receive personalized college and career mentoring.

Parents and community members can look forward to staying informed with school news on two of our newest electronic marquees scheduled for completion by this upcoming school year.The Bridgeway Island Elementary and Bryte College and Career Training campuses are next on the district-wide list to receive marquees this summer.
