Santa Barbara County possesses a wide range of micro climates that produce a wide range of Syrah styles. The cooler, western part of the Santa Ynez Valley produces wines with bright red berry flavors, whereas the eastern, warmer parts produces wines with lusher dark fruit flavors. And the Santa Maria area produces their own unique styles, typically with high acidity, which makes them very food friendly. Planted in over 10 percent of all Californian vineyards, the Zinfandel grape is an important player in the California red wine industry, creating a big, ripe red wine that can come with some of the highest alcohol content of any red wine on the market (up to 17 percent). Due to the hot sun of California, many Zinfandels have come to be known for their jammy, fruity characteristics.

So while we don't have as much vintage to vintage variation as areas that aren't blessed with our climate, there are still subtle differences between vintage years. For this tasting, we have selected all Cabernets from a single vintage year, 2009, so you can compare different wines that were all created with the same weather conditions so you can see the difference other factors make in the taste of the wine..

World of GSM Blends Wine Tasting
Many centuries ago, French vintners discovered that if you blend Grenache with Syrah and Mourvedre (GSM), you could produce a delicious, food friendly and easy drinking style of wine. Once vintners in other countries found out about these blends, many soon followed suit, creating their own GSM blends with the unique characteristics that their area provided. Come in to compare the original with versions from several different countries to see how they interpret the same basic blend.
