Summer Camp

WAITLISTED?

We’re sorry your camper landed on the waitlist. We know this is can be very disappointing. Most camp groups sold out in under ten minutes!

GETTING IN
There is still hope for a great summer. Parents should know we are giving our waitlist thoughtful attention, and between now and June 15, our camp rosters are bound to change as families change their summer plans. When this happens, and we are able to move any single camper off the waitlist, we do it immediately. We will both email and call using the information from your online account when you enrolled if we have a spot available for your child .

SUMMER ALTERNATIVES
We realize that your camper may specifically want to be at this specific camp with their friends, but we do offer more great camps, clinics and programs. There are still spaces in many of our programs like like archery, tennis, golf, football, and many of our arts and science camps. We encourage you to recruit a friend from the wait list. (Check out Page 33 of the brochure or Register online at waylandrec.com .)

ABOUT THE WAITLIST
While we increased the capacity of our summer camps by over 50% over the last few years, our camps remain extremely popular and most sessions sell out in just a few minutes. Unfortunately, we are unable to increase our capacity primarily due to indoor occupancy restrictions, building maintenance being conducted at the high school, and shared space with other programs there.

Why are our camps so popular? It’s no accident. These are fantastic camps with excellent staff.   Our staff is carefully selected, screened and trained – and they bring the magic of camp every day. We look for and select young adults and professionals who are sensitive, caring, and fun, but also responsible, independent, and put safety first.

We try to instill these same character values that we seek in our staff in our campers. We take a lot of pride in our camps – it’s not childcare and it’s not a school and we take the difference very seriously. We believe the fleeting summer days between school years is as crucial to child development as the school year itself.

OUR CAMPS
We choose to license our camps with the Board of Health and adhere to Massachusetts Department of Public Health regulations even though most municipal camps are exempt from this. We do this to ensure that our camps meet the same standards that parents expect from other high-quality summer camps.

Our camp staff attend 30 to 40 hours of training and on-boarding prior to the camp. They are required to work the entire summer to ensure consistency for your campers. Staff are all CPR and First Aid certified too. We deliberately make it challenging and a bit of a commitment just to get in the door because we want folks who want to be here.

CHALLENGES OF EXPANDING THE CAMP
We are aware of many misconceptions about why we're unable to expand the camp, including the notion that we should be able to simply hire more staff. We wish it were that simple. The issue is not staffing, it’s a space issue and the resulting logistics of providing a high-quality camp program. The space issue has many layers, and we are continuously working on getting more space that is ‘camp appropriate’; not just within the school but to accommodate the whole camp activity schedule. Consider capacity restraints of the buses, the field trip venues, the lifeguard ratios and aquatics logistics, rain days, the safety and emergency evacuation plans... We wish we could provide space for every interested camper and we appreciate your understanding around the constraints.

STAY TUNED
We are hopeful to make this summer the best summer ever, and serve as many campers as possible. We anticipate that rosters and waitlists will move after the registration rush, and definitely before summer begins. As soon as we can move kiddos off the waitlist, we will!

We hope to be in touch soon to move you off the waitlist.

We love camp. Wayland Recreation camps come to you with a lot of camp expertise. Camp Coordinator Paul McCarthy has worked in all levels of camping since before he was old enough to work. One Wayland Rec Camp Director has a master’s degree in child development, and our preschool camp is led by high-level certified Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care Directors who have decades of experience. Waylands’ Recreation Director has been running summer camps for over 15 years (day camps, sports camps, sleepaway camps), and she also accredits camps all over New England with the American Camp Association. The average age of our staff is over 20 years, and among them there are many years of dedication and service in education systems and youth organizations.
