Grappling with Legacy
by Sylvia Brown

Since 1638 the Browns have provided community leaders in Rhode Island, one the nation's most idiosyncratic states. This is the remarkable story of a colorful and multifaceted family that for over three hundred years struggled with societies toughest issues-slavery, immigration, child labor, the dispossessed- and with their own internal family tensions. It is also the story of the family's philanthropy. Charitable giving is such an intrinsic part of the American culture that it's story needs to be told. The author is the eldest of the eleventh generation of Browns in Rhode Island.

Bee Lessons

Howard Scott has been a New England Beekeeper for 30 years. He is a frequent contributor to American Bee Journal and Bee Culture.

Staff Picks for August
House At The Edge of Night
by Catherine Banner

An enchanting story set on the beautiful island of Castellamare off the coast of Italy and spanning a century and many generations of families.  Armedeo and Pina Esposito and their three children are the center of the story, but it's the way all of the people living and interacting with each other and the descriptions of the island that pull you in and make you feel as if you are living there as well.  Events in history will effect all the people living on Castellemare.  Just a very enjoyable read.   Sue

It

by Stephen King

"It" is my favorite Stephen King novel and yet each time I read it not only do I discover things I had missed before but the emotional attachment I feel for the characters and their journey through the darkness is still as strong as the first time I read it. Not many books in my life have touched me so deeply as this one. I get very angry when people call it just a horror story. It's the story of friendship between seven distinct young people who are pushed into a situation that they certainly are not ready for and yet they handle themselves better than some of the adults in the book. When they are called back to fulfill their promise made in their youth, the darkness once again threatens not only their lives but their sanity as well. I believe "It" is Stephen King's best work. -Lisa

Razor Girl

by Carl Hiaasen
A female con artist (she's the razor girl) teams up with a former detective now working as a restaurant health inspector in Hiaasen's latest novel now out in paperback. They are trying to locate the missing bearded star of a redneck TV show called the "Bayou Brethren" about a family of cajun rooster farmers. He's run off after going on an off color tirade at a public appearance. Throw in some mobsters and a few Gambian pouch rats and hilarity ensues.

Al Franken, Giant Of The Senate by Al Franken:
by Al Franken

Truly absorbing account of how a SNL writer & comedian ran for his state's senate seat. Franken doesn't spend a great deal of time on his comedy career but the background he gives on his former career, as well as his early life with his parents and brother, do shed light on why he would ultimately decide to run for the senate. Throughout the book, Franken's humor shines through, even when he discusses recount procedures, constituent bean feeds & his colleagues across the aisle. Good read for anyone who is interested in how the work of governing gets done. (Hint: it involves a lot of reading & a lot of binders). -Kim

. The Van Helsing family has a long history in the literature of monster-fighting - they've been stomping around since at least 1897 when Professor Abraham Van Helsing first crossed paths with his biggest bad, Dracula. Strange Practice is about the newest member of the family, Dr. Greta Helsing (the family dropped the Van decades ago, for political reasons) who has, as the title suggests, a rather unusual medical practice.. By the time the arsonist was caught some 86 fires had been set. Monica Hesse went to report on the fires for The Washington Post, but while she was there she found a much bigger story.
