Staff Picks for July

Little French Bistro
by Nina George
Marianne has made a decision. After being married to a controlling and unfeeling man for forty-one years, she has decided to end it all while on a trip to Paris by throwing herself into the Seine. Rescued from the frigid waters, she begins a journey to the Brittany Coast also known as "the end of the world". Once again Nina George has taken us on a journey of discovery, life, love and second chances. Through her beautiful and vivid descriptions, I longed to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of Brittany and meet all the interesting characters Marianne encounters. A delightful novel that shows it's never too late to start living and not just existing.  -Lisa

The Long Haul: A Truckers Tales of Life on the Road
by Finn Murphy
What appears on the surface like an insider look at the life of a "mover" turns out to be not only that, but a very entertaining look at America on the move. Where it's been and where it's going. Finn Murphy has been a long haul trucker for 30 years and he's got some great stories to tell. Like a Mark Twain behind the wheel he takes us on the road coast to coast and city to city with a voice that's honest and direct and sometimes even poetic.  -Bob

American Ulysses   by Ronald C. White Jr

Mention the name Ulysses S. Grant & images of an alcoholic General who led hundreds of thousands of men to slaughter in the Civil War, & a failed President, come to mind for some.  In this wonderful biography of Grant, we meet a man whose highest ambition was  to become a math professor after graduating from West Point. In this portrayal, Grant is a lover of theater, novels, a master horseman & a devoted husband & father, as well as the grimly determined General who led the Union to victory in the Civil War. Throughout the book, Grant is revealed as honest, sometimes naïve about human nature, self-deprecating & quite funny.  This is a well-balanced portrait & highly enjoyable. -Kim

Authors on Main Series for July at the Contemporary Theater
Welcomes author Christine Woodside on Sunday July 23rd at 6pm
She will be appearing to discuss her new book:

Libertarians on the Prairie:
Laura Ingalls Wilder, Rose Wilder Lane, and the Making of the Little House Books

This myth-busting book finally reveals the true story behind the beloved children's classics.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books have taught millions of Americans about frontier life, giving inspiration to many and in the process becoming icons of our national identity. In this groundbreaking narrative of literary detection, Christine Woodside reveals for the first time the full extent of the collaboration between Laura and her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane. Rose hated farming and fled the family homestead as an adolescent, eventually becoming a nationally prominent writer. Drawing on original manuscripts and letters, Woodside shows how Rose reshaped her mother's story into a series of heroic tales that rebutted the policies of the New Deal. Their secret collaboration would lead in time to their estrangement. A fascinating look at the relationship between two strong-willed women.

Chris Woodside is a writer and editor who lives in the lower Connecticut River Valley and explores the higher country of New England. She writes about the history of ordinary Americans and their clashes with nature. She is fascinated with American life in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, and backcountry adventure at all times.

This event is free. The Theater is located at 327 Main Street in Wakefield, Rhode Island. The building is handicapped accessible.  Free parking is available.

This Month's Featured Local Interest Titles

World War II Rhode Island by Christian McBurney, Brian L. Wallin, Patrick T. Conley, John W. Kennedy and Maureen Taylor

Rhode Island's contribution to World War II vastly exceeded its small size. Narragansett Bay was an armed camp dotted by army forts and navy facilities. They included the country's most important torpedo production and testing facilities at Newport and the Northeast's largest naval air station at Quonset Point. Three special, top-secret German POW camps were based in Narragansett and Jamestown. Meanwhile, Rhode Island workers from all over the state-including, for the first time, many women-manufactured military equipment and built warships, most notably the Liberty ships at Providence Shipyard. The authors trace Rhode Island's outsized wartime role, from the scare of an enemy air raid after Pearl Harbor to the war's final German U-boat sunk off Point Judith.

Magic Rabbit of Green Hill
by Marcia Letourneau

The inspiration for this book is the author's great love of the Green Hill beach area of Rhode Island, which borders on the Trustom Pond wildlife preserve. A familiar sight in the region is the many animals that populate the preserve, especially rabbits, but also commonly, deer, and swans that delight children and people of all ages. All the illustrations are of the Green Hill and Trustom Pond area, and have been painted by the author, who is also an artist.

Dark Night of The Soul
by Debra Zannelli

A centuries old vampire, Gregor, kills for hunger, but also for the pleasure of the kill. He hates anyone who reminds him of the weak and fearful child he once was. Gregor also has a son, Marcus, who is nothing like Gregor. Tormented by what he's been forced to become, Marcus clings to the humanity Gregor has tried to erase, and escapes. A mortal girl falls in love with Marcus, but Gregor lurks. He returns to the New England town where his son Marcus escaped him. Still angry, he wants to punish Marcus and all those who stand in his way.

We have the award winning Paperback Game

Loved Scrabble?

Had a blast with Banannagrams?

Here's your next game!

You are an author trying to finish kitschy paperback novels. Complete Westerns, Science Fiction, Romance or even a Crime Noir. Live the dream - and maybe pay the bills. Word-building meets deck-building in the unique game Paperback. Players start with a deck of letter cards and wild cards. With each hand they form words, and purchase more powerful letters based on how well their word scored. Most letters have abilities that activate when they are used in a word, such as drawing more cards or double letter score. Players buy wilds to gain victory points. Play against someone or for cooperative play.

What people are saying:

"I've had this game for a month or two now and I honestly believe it to be one of the best games of the year." -  HeirToPendragon

"I love this game. It's incredible how well the word building works as an action/money restriction mechanic for a deck builder." -  Kennen_Rudd

"It seems impossible that this game didn't exist before 2014. So simple and so much fun to play!"
- Crystal Pisano
