Staff Picks For October

From Sand and Ash
by Amy Harmon

A gripping and powerful historical novel set in Italy during WWII.  The story centers around Eva Rosselli and her family, who are Jewish, and Angelo Bianco, a Catholic boy from America destined to become a priest, who comes to live with them before the war starts.  This is their love story which takes many twists and turns, but also a tale of survival, resistance, and heroism during one of the darkest times of our history.  Could not put this one down.  Sue

The Lost Letter
by Jillian Cantor

A beautifully written story that takes place in the dual time periods of 1989 Los Angeles and 1939 Austria. Every time I opened this book I found myself completely caught up in the events and people that inhabited the story especially the love story between Kristoff and Elena. As I reached the end, I didn't even realize I was holding my breath between pages so anxious about how the story would play out. A perfect book for book club! -Lisa

Anne Boleyn: A King's Obsession
by Allison Weir

Reading from the perspective of Anne was fascinating for me. This book has made me see her as less of a villain and more of a poor girl who got caught up in the trappings of King Henry VIII and all he had to offer. Another great read from Weir!
-Bonnie

The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
Gregory Hays Translation

What can a Roman emperor who lived 2000 years ago tell us about life in the 21st century? A great deal, it turns out. The Meditations are a series of philosophical exercises, written perhaps as a form of self help, to enable Marcus to remind himself of the things which are of utmost importance in life: looking after your own virtue, doing what is good & right for not only yourself but for everyone else, how to not let distractions, both small & major derail you from your purpose. Written during the later years of his life, Marcus found time from a long, brutal war campaign to sit down & write about how to not let the people around you annoy you with their pettiness, to tell himself to get out of bed each day & do what needs to be done, to remark that nothing in nature is evil & so one cannot be harmed by it, not even by death or the loss of loved ones. A wonderful guide for anyone seeking to find calm within during turbulent times. -kim

Titles recently Featured

 Sleeping Beauties
by Stephen King and Owen King

What if every woman on Earth went to sleep and never woke up, leaving only men to run things?
That is the horror at the center of sleeping beauties. The new novel by Stephen King and his son Owen.

Unbelieveable
by Katy Tur

During Donald Trump's campaign for president, there were times at his rallies when he singled out one reporter for criticism. Katy Tur, who covered the Trump campaign for NBC News and MSNBC, remembers those instances vividly. Now she's written a memoir about her experiences on the campaign trail, called Unbelievable: My Front-Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History.

Hero of the Empire
by Candice Millard

When we think of Winston Churchill, we think of World War II when he was the prime minister of Great Britan. Author Candice Millard's new book focuses on the Boer War, and  argues that Churchill's battlefield coverage and daring escape from capture while serving as a correspondent for a British newspaper were turning points in his life.

Manhattan Beach
by Jennifer Egan

This is a big, traditional historical novel - in the manner of a Ken Follett or Herman Wouk. The sweeping story Egan tells here is intertwined with New York's elemental identity as a seaport, which became more crucial than ever during the Second World War.
Manhattan Beach is a big gorgeous tribute to New York City and its seaport. In drawing from the classic catalog of New York stories, Manhattan Beach also takes its place among them.

Provenance
by Ann Leckie

A standalone story that takes place in the "Ancillary" universe Ann Leckie created in her previous trilogy.  Provenance, lays out a gently convincing case for a cozy space mystery.
This is a story about the necessity of exploring the edges of the known, which makes Provenance a fitting addition to the Ancillary world, and suggests an expanded universe with many such stories yet to be told.

Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright

The "true" in Wright's title doesn't refer to the traditional kinds of scriptural truths we think of when we think of religions and truth. Wright is explicitly not interested in the traditional aspects of Buddhism as a religion.  Instead, he wants to focus on Buddhism's diagnosis of the human condition. The part that is relevant to the here and now. Wright wants to explore because that is where he sees its perspective lining up with scientific fields like evolutionary psychology and neurobiology.
