Electronic results and documents available nationally in the Welsh Clinical Portal

For the first time health professionals across Wales can view clinical documents and test results electronically in hospitals, no matter where the tests were taken, via the Welsh Clinical Portal.

An upgrade to the Welsh Clinical Portal in North Wales has been the final link to ensure that clinicians can now see the results and documents from anywhere across the country.

The Welsh Clinical Portal is a digital workspace used by doctors and health professionals to share and display patient information from a number of sources, including the
Welsh GP Record .

As well as test results, clinical documents are being made available across health board organisational boundaries. There are now twelve million documents to view including electronic GP referrals, emergency department attendances, clinic and results letters. The Welsh Clinical Portal is enabling information to follow the patient wherever care is provided.

More information on the electronic results service can be found on our webpages.
New electronic referral service for dentistry in Wales

Patients in Wales referred for specialist dentistry care will be able to track the status of their referral online.

It's part of a new digital dental referral system, funded by Welsh Government, to be rolled out from this autumn. Benefits include a faster referral process, potentially shortening waiting times for patients.

The new system will replace the current paper based process used by dentists to send referrals, which can take up to four days to be delivered by post. It will allow dentists to refer patients needing specialist dental treatment, such as oral surgery and orthodontics, using an electronic referral process.

Higher quality information will be used to inform clinical decisions. For example, the new orthodontic referral template will support the referring dentist to calculate the need, timeliness and suitability of patients for orthodontic assessment and treatment.

" We are delighted to announce the award of this contract. This innovation is the culmination of considerable work and effort from a number of organisations and clinicians. Once operational Wales will be the first country in the UK to implement a fully electronic system for dental referrals.

We anticipate this will contribute towards realising our vision of accessible specialist dental care for those who need it in the most appropriate setting."

Dr Colette Bridgman. Welsh Government Chief Dental Officer

Radiograph scanners will be offered to dental practices in Wales to ensure high-resolution images are attached to referrals and standardised referral templates will ensure consistent information is provided to NHS specialist service.

The initial three-year contract to supply the service was awarded to FDS Consultants following a robust procurement process led by the NHS Wales Informatics Service, in collaboration with Welsh Government, dental professionals, Public Health Wales and health boards. FDS Consultants provide a similar service to a number of trusts in NHS England.

The new service becomes available from September 2018, with planned early-adopter health boards Abertawe Bro-Morgannwg University (ABMU) and Hywel Dda. The service is due to be available across Wales by January 2019.
Digital innovation powers sore throat 'test and treat' pilot

An on-the-spot sore throat swab service, designed to relieve pressure on GPs and tackle antibiotic resistance, will be available at up to 70 community pharmacies in Wales from the autumn. The throat swab test would be provided for patients, if appropriate, following a clinical examination by a pharmacist.

The initiative will be piloted as part of the Choose Pharmacy service, which encourages patients to visit their community pharmacist instead of their GP for common ailments, such as indigestion, hay fever, conjunctivitis and sore throats. Choose Pharmacy is enabled by a pharmacy IT system designed and developed by NHS Wales Informatics Service for use in NHS Wales.

Initially, the sore throat swab service will be available in selected pharmacies in Cwm Taf and Betsi Cadwaladr local health board areas.
NHS Wales Informatics Service recognised with the Silver Corporate Health Award

We are delighted to have achieved the Silver Award for the Corporate Health Standard which promotes good practice and supports the organisation in taking active steps to promote the health and wellbeing of staff.

"It was great to share with assessors our positive organisational culture, great team work and a shared passion for improving the health and wellbeing of our staff." says Sarah Brooks, Workforce and Organisational Development Manager, who also co-chairs our Health and Wellbeing Group.

The standards are good practice measurements designed by the Welsh Government's Healthy Working Wales programme.

Cyber awareness training for all NHS Wales staff

Training and e-learning to protect NHS Wales from cyber attacks and hacking is to be rolled out to NHS Staff. The training has been arranged in response to the growing global threat from cyber attacks, and follows a robust procurement managed by the NHS Wales Informatics Service.

It will be available to staff on the training platforms - Learning@Wales and the Electronic Staff Record system.  It includes videos and learning modules covering topics such as, how cyber attacks are happening, how to handle personal data, and when to seek advice.

"This training will enable NHS Wales staff to be vigilant to the threat of cyber attacks and hacking," says Martin Webley, Head of Cyber Security at the Informatics Service. "It's important that we all know what signs to look out for, and what to do in the case of a potential attack."

The content will be trialled by the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership, and a pilot of the training will take place before it is made available Wales wide.

The training has been developed through the collaborative platform known as CC2i which shares digital ideas among public sector bodies and uses 'Dojo' - an animated video-based cyber awareness training tool.
GP practices make systems choice

GP practices have been hearing from systems suppliers Microtest and Vision at a series of roadshows held over three weeks in April and early May. Practices are making a choice on which system to have in place for the next five years, and they have until the end of May to make their final decision.

Information and videos from the roadshows, including a summary of questions and answers from the events , are on the  Primary Care website (access is only available via the NHS Wales network) or for supplier specific information visit the Vision  and Microtest  websites.

The new framework contract to supply GP IT systems and services to NHS Wales was announced in January. It followed a robust and rigorous procurement, overseen by the national GMS IM&T Programme Board.
