Spanning the Decades
An Historical Look into Walstrom Marine - The 1950s

Enjoy this section for the next seven months as we explore the previous seven decades of the history of Walstrom Marine with Ward Walstrom, Jr.

In 1952, Paul Griffeth left the company and Harbor Springs to further a career in education.  Charles Hollerith replaced him on the Board, and in l953, the name of the company was changed to Walstrom Marine.

In 1954, new wood piling was installed on the east side of the main dock to break the force of the dreaded east wind.  Many a night, Ward would trudge down to the boathouse and move boats out of slips to keep them from bashing in their rub rails.

Ward, Jr. recalls what it was like growing up around the marina in the summers of the late l950s.  "You could catch all the perch you wanted off the gas dock or elevator lift.  I spent a lot of time watching Bob Ward, Vincent Cooper, and Leo Johnson work on boats. Up and down the dock, boat captains dressed in khaki brown were sanding and varnishing brightwork."

February Boat Shows Recap

The Yachts Miami Beach boat show again proved to be a success with Hatteras having great activity getting six yachts under contract.  The Hatteras 70 MY was the center of attention - watch for an upcoming article in our print Docklines on the 70MY by Dave Lyle, Rick Venner, and Brian Granger who all experienced the excitement first hand.

Right next door, Tiara continued to experience success with the expanded Coupe Series showing strong interest in the new Tiara 39 Coupe.  The amazing Q44 Adventure Yacht continues to draw attention as the only boat like it available from any manufacturer.  Stay tuned for additional Tiara information on new model releases as well as the update on the Tiara VIP event set for Sunday March 13th with details below.

The Miami International Boat Show made a major move to the Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin. Short of transportation glitches, the event was considered a great success with high energy levels from the attendees and an abundance of well staffed and stocked supplier booths.  We look to this show to grow more in the future.  Chris-Craft and Pursuit both had displays at the new Miami Marine Stadium venue.  The Pursuit S 408 Center Console was a star of the show as were all of the Chris-Crafts on display.

It won't be long!  Here's the satellite photo of the Great Lakes ice cover as of February 3, 2016.  It's a far cry from the 90%+ coverage of 2015.  Are you ready??  At this pace, we will be launching by late March and have the possibility of adding two months of boating to our season for 2016.  Make sure that the Walstrom Marine Service Department has your launch scheduled!

This is off of Harbor Point, February 24th, 2016.  It's mostly skim ice and a little blow will make it go away.  The Harbor has been mostly open all winter.
