Let's Play In The Park 2018 Program - Neebin Park

If you and your kids are looking to get out and get active in our community this summer, be sure to bring your kids to "Let's Play in the Park" which is a free, half day drop in play program for children 6-12 yrs. This supervised program is operated by qualified leaders trained in the HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development. Children participate in physical activities like cooperative games, sport, arts and crafts in our parks across Mississauga.

With only 5% of children meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity every day, play is one of the easiest, most affordable and fun ways for children to get moving. The City of Mississauga is committed to supporting the benefits of play through this free playground program.

This program will be offered in Ward 11 again this summer at Neebin Park (635 Kaiser Dr.) from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm July 2-August 31. For more program and location information, visit www.mississauga.ca/play. I hope you and your kids are able to get out and play this summer!   Top
2018 Community Rides

It's time to grab your bicycle and get ready for the 2018 Community Rides, which are already underway throughout the City. These rides will continue into the fall season and are a great way to learn where to ride in our city and meet your neighbours.

Community Rides are free, guided bike rides designed to introduce residents to cycling. Rides are planned on roads, trails and lanes through Mississauga's diverse neighbourhoods and vary in length and style.

All residents who want to enjoy cycling in a community-based setting are invited to attend. Rides are led by experienced riders including volunteer members of the Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC).

Marshals divide the group into three levels with a goal to ensure riders are comfortable with their level and pace. There is a mandatory helmet policy adopted by the MCAC stating that all riders must wear helmets. The kick off ride and ice cream after all Community Rides are sponsored by Toronto Pearson.

This year, the Tour Training Ride will travel through the Ward 11 community, along Bristol Rd / Main St., through the Village Square, and onto Thomas St. The details of this ride are as follows:

Burnhamthorpe and Bristol - Tour Training Ride
DATE:  Saturday September 1, 2018 @ 10:00 am

Speed Limit Reductions on Britannia Rd.

I am very pleased to report that after conducting a speed review on Britannia Road, the Region of Peel will be implementing speed limit reductions on this roadway as follows:
  • From 195 meters west of Tillsdown Road/River Grove Avenue to 70 metres east of Creditview Road, reduce the posted speed limit from 60 to 50km/h;
  • From 70 metres east of Creditview Road to 70 metres east of Terry Fox Way/Silken Laumann Way, reduce the posted speed Limit from 70 to 60km/h.
As part of the speed review, Britannia Road was divided into two study areas, from 195 meters west of Tillsdown Road/River Grove to 70 meters east of Creditview Road, and from 70 meters east of Creditview Road to 70 meters east of Terry Fox Way/Silken Laumann Way. Region Traffic Staff evaluated each area by utilizing the Transportation of Canada Speed Zone Methodology to determine the recommended speed limits. The Transportation Association of Canada Speed Zone Methodology is a standardized technique that is used to establish an appropriate posted speed limit for a specific section of roadway. In addition, Staff considered the surrounding land use, road characteristics, recent development, and pedestrian activity in their review.

The speed review concluded that the existing posted speed was adequate based on current road geometrics and conditions; however, the residential land use surrounding the area, multi-use trail, nearby Credit River trail system, eight schools, one community centre, and numerous parks all within a 1.5 kilometre radius of the study location contribute to increased pedestrian activity in the area. In an effort to provide safer conditions for pedestrians and as part of adopting the Vison Zero road safety approach, Region Traffic Staff recommended speed reductions of 10km/h over the entire study area.

The speed limit reductions on Britannia Road , in the area of Tillsdown Road/River Grove Avenue to Creditview Road were approved by Region of Peel Council at the Regional Council meeting on Thursday, April 12, 2018 . These speed limit reductions will assist with promoting pedestrian and vehicular safety in this area and create a safer community for everyone.   Top
Curbside Battery Collection Update

As you may know, since 2016 the Region of Peel has been running a curbside battery collection pilot program, whereby household batteries are collected curbside twice per year in an effort to divert these items from the landfill.

I am very pleased to report that this pilot program has been quite successful thus far in diverting household batteries from the landfill. Since the program began in 2016, 39.2 tonnes of batteries have been collected and diverted from landfills. I would like to thank you for doing your part and participating in this great stewardship program.

The curbside battery collection program will be monitored for another year and the results will be reported to Regional Council. In 2018, the program will run as follows:
  • Collection events will be scheduled to coincide with Earth Week in April and Waste Reduction Week in October
  • Instead of using specially printed bags distributed by the Region, residents will be advised to use any transparent, sealable bag to set out their batteries
I hope you and your family will continue to participate in this great program and keep curbside batteries out of our landfills. For more information about the program, please visit www.peelregion.ca/waste .   Top

For a spayed or neutered dog or cat, the cost is $20 for one year and $30 for two years. Learn more about pet licensing or purchase your two-year pet licence at mypetmississauga.ca .   Top
