COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Seniors' Information Fair

I held an information day on June 14 for seniors at the Meadowvale Community Centre to celebrate Seniors' Month. Over 25 organizations and city, region and provincial departments provided lots of information and services for our seniors. I was joined by our MPP, Bob Delaney and we both provided much information from our respective offices. Hundreds of seniors came out to enjoy refreshments and from the feedback I know they appreciated the information.  I was asked to make this an annual event and confirm that I will be holding it again next year.

Central Erin Mills Crime Prevention

On June 13, I held a meeting on crime issues in the south end of Central Erin Mills. This was in response to residents concerned about recent break-ins in their neighbourhood. Over 80 residents came out to express their concerns and ask questions of Peel Regional Police, City of Mississauga security staff, Safe City Mississauga and me. It was a good meeting with many issues discussed and many suggestions made that residents can implement. We will be following up directly with those involved to help them move ahead on forming Neighbourhood Watch and providing numbers to call when they need help in the future.

If you would like me to hold a meeting on this topic in your neighbourhood, let me know and I would be pleased to arrange.

With Mayor McCallion and members of the Lake Wabukayne Stewardship Committee

Lake Wabukayne
Stewardship Day

Many thanks to the Friends of Lake Wabukayne, who arranged a fun filled and informative day at our beautiful lake on Saturday, June 15. Hundreds of residents enjoyed a free BBQ, painted garbage cans, planted flowers and shrubs and learned more about the new programs at the lake. A Trillium Grant, applied for by Mississauga-Meadowvale Rotary Club, allowed the group to install new interpretative signs at the lake, build a butterfly garden, produce an educational brochure and install a floating garden that will be unique in the City. If you haven't been to Lake Wabukayne in a while it is place of peace and beauty in the heart of our community. It is located off Inlake east of Glen Erin Drive.

Ward 9 Bike Ride

Thanks to those who joined me on May 30 to ride their bikes on our lovely trails. We started and ended at Baskin Robbins at Glen Erin and Britannia and travelled north to Glen Eden Park and back through Meadowvale. I will be holding another ride in September and we will have some shorter routes planned as well so hope to see you there. Watch www.ward9.ca for dates and times.

With students at Castlebridge Public School
School Garden Day

Congratulations to Castlebridge Public School for being the first school to launch a school garden and kick off School Garden Day on May 24. I had the pleasure of joining the staff and students as they celebrated this wonderful initiative that is part of "A Garden in Every School" campaign.

New Park Coming at Tenth Line/Aquitaine

We have an exciting opportunity to build a new park in the community as we bought the Union Gas lands at Aquitaine and Tenth Line. This was a replacement of Plum Tree Park which we sold to the Peel School board to use as a school playground.

I held an Open House on April 23rd to invite residents to discuss what they would like to see in the park. We got many ideas and staff are looking at what might be feasible. Some of the suggestions included, a community garden, small dog park, skateboard/bike facility, playground, water feature, pavilion/shelter and open space.

Once staff determines what is doable, I will be holding another meeting and extending the input area so we can get more feedback. If you have any suggestions, please send them to me at pat.saito@mississauga.ca.

UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Traffic Calming Pilot

Council approved my request in the 2013 budget for a traffic calming pilot. Four locations were funded and were selected by Traffic staff for the pilot. One location is in Ward 9. Edenwood Drive between Battleford and Aquitaine was selected due to its location and the presence of two schools. Staff will be holding a meeting for residents in the fall to show the proposed changes.

DEVELOPMENT ISSUES

6719 Glen Erin Drive

I held a community information meeting to show residents the new submission for redevelopment on the northeast corner of Aquitaine and Glen Erin Drive. A prior application for a 20 storey apartment building was withdrawn once the applicant realized the community and I would not be supporting it. The owner has come forward with a revised plan for 93 townhomes.

The formal application has not been filed yet and once it is I will hold a further meeting to discuss. The plan will also be posted then on the Ward 9 website at www.ward9.ca.

Village of Erin Meadows Phase 2

I am pleased that the owner of the Village of Erin Meadows, located at the southeast corner of Erin Centre Blvd. and Winston Churchill Blvd. has applied to complete the final phase of the seniors' project.

The zoning for the entire plan was approved after much community consultation in October 2000 and and included 180 beds for Long Term Care residents.  Phase two completes the facility with a central town square area and a 7 storey apartment building with much needed 136 retirement home beds as well as 107 seniors' apartments .

I am holding an Open House at the Village on Monday, July 15, 2013 at the Village of Erin Meadows, 2930 Erin Centre Blvd from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm and all are welcome to attend to view the plans. The plan is also on the Ward 9 website at www.ward9.ca under City services/Development.

Meadowvale Islamic Centre

There has been no further activity on the application to construct the Meadowvale Islamic centre at Winston Churchill Blvd. Once an application is filed I will hold a public meeting.

OTHER NEWS

Fit and Active City

I am sitting on a committee at the Region to look for ways to improve active living in Mississauga and Peel. I am looking at many new projects that will encourage residents to become more active and have met with staff at the City to look at how we can open up our stairwells at City Hall to encourage their use instead of the elevators for staff and the public.

The outdoor gym at Lake Aquitaine is the first project I introduced and has become a model for more such projects in the Region. I am planning a smaller version at Lake Wabukayne Park and looking at other parks in the ward that are suitable candidates. If you have a suggestion let me know.

We are blessed with numerous trails in Ward 9 where we can walk or ride and I encourage you to take advantage of them. We now have new bike paths on Tenth Line from Britannia all the way to Argentia and a new bike trail on Winston Churchill Blvd. from Erin centre to Britannia. Try them out and enjoy our community.
