Ward 9 Councillor's Report March  2014 - Vol 9

Dear Neighbour:

Hopefully we are coming closer to seeing spring come to the city as I know we are all tired of this long, cold winter weather.

There were lots of events happening in the ward and the city in the past month and lots more coming up as we head into spring.

Thanks to the Mississauga Steelheads who provided free hockey tickets to Ward 9 Night on February 28th.  I was proud to host over 650 Ward 9 residents at the game!

Our next big event in the Ward is the three days of celebrations planned for Meadowvale Theatre's 25th Anniversary in April.  I hope you will be able to join me and members of the Meadowvale Theatre Advisory Board.

The celebration starts on Friday April 25th with a free event for youth.  "Sauga Stars" will showcase Mississauga's leading youth artists and the evening is being hosted by punk rock band Billy Talent.  On Saturday night, Meadowavle's own stage actress Lisa Horner will host a gala celebration of 25 years of theatre.  On Sunday, April 27th, we are hosting an Open House with my Free BBQ and popcorn along with children's activities, games and much more including a special anniversary cake. You can find information about all three events in the "Ward 9 News" section in this newsletter and online at www.mt25anniversary.com.

Remember to check the Ward 9 website at www.ward9.ca for more events and information on what's going in in our community.

Eden Community Food Bank's Fresh Product Box Program

Eden Community Food Bank is offering residents a great way to support the food bank and buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

This program is intended to  encourage everyone to eat healthier by increasing the amount of fresh produce coming into your homes.

Every Friday morning the food bank buys fresh fruit and vegetables from farmers and distributors at The Ontario Food Terminal at less than wholesale prices. The prices are very low and these savings are passed on to anyone interested.

There are two sizes of boxes: $10.00 (at this time of the year, it probably represents $20-$30 of produce, based on grocery store prices) and $20.00 (approximately $40-$65 in the supermarket)

To order your fresh produce box, email freshproducebox@edenfoodbank.org each week.  Orders must be received no later than Thursdays at 5:00 pm.

A volunteer will email you a confirmation on the Thursday afternoon. Pick-up is Friday afternoon at 3185 Unity Drive from noon-4pm. If you can organise an order of over 15 boxes, please contact Eden about the possibility of delivery.

Meadowvale Community Centre Update

Thanks to all who attended my Open House on February 26 to show the plans for the Meadowvale Community Centre renovations.  Everyone who attended was very excited to see what a great facility we will have once it is completed in 2016.

The MCC is still on schedule to close for renovations in July of 2014 when River Grove Community Centre re-opens.

The renovations will allow us to provide more recreation programs while updating and replacing some of the building's systems that were reaching an age where they would have to be replaced.

As well, Meadowvale Library will be moved to the community centre from the nearby Meadowvale Town Centre. The community centre will have a larger fitness area, new meeting rooms and program space, a new gym and a new therapeutic pool.  It will also have a teaching kitchen and will start offering cooking classes.

Please check my website at ward9.ca to see the plans.
