Dear Neighbour:

Summer is over and I am sure you are busy getting back into the routines of school and fall activities.  There are so many programs available at the City for you and your family and I encourage you to check out the Active Guide by clicking here or pick up a copy at a library or community centre.

Thank you to all of you who have sent me comments and ideas on the Ward 9 e-newsletter.  I am glad you find it informative and will keep the information coming.

Keep sending your suggestions for articles to me at [email protected].

It was a busy summer and I had the pleasure of attending many special events.  I especially enjoy those that involved children and I thank the many organizations  that provided summer schools and programs for our young people.  It was also a time to celebrate special events in our community. Congratulations to all who were involved in these activities.

Mosque Application

6496/6508 Winston Churchill Blvd

The City has received an application from the Meadowvale Islamic Centre to rezone the lands at 6496/6508 Winston Churchill Blvd. to construct a place of religious worship.

This application will be processed under the requirements of the Province of Ontario's  Planning Act which requires the application to be circulated for comment to various agencies followed by a formal public meeting to be held at the Planning and Development Committee of Council.  No date has been set yet for this meeting but I expect it will be early 2014.

As is my practice I will also be holding a Ward meeting to allow the applicant an opportunity to present the plans to the community and to hear questions and comments on the application.  City staff will respond to these comments and questions in a report to Planning Committee.

Once I have more information on the timing for the process, I will arrange for the Ward meeting and will advertise it via this newsletter and portable signs as well as notice to the immediate neighbourhood.

Twinning

Region Project Twinning of the West Trunk Sewer on Erin Mills Parkway

We have another major project happening on Erin Mills Parkway.  The Region has started construction of twinning of the west trunk sewer line that runs under Erin Mills parkway.

This project will take three years to complete and will be done using a tunnel method.  Shafts are being constructed at several locations along Erin Mills Parkway and crews will use these to tunnel down and work underground to minimize impact on traffic. You may have seen equipment at the old hammerhead opposite Erin Mills Town Centre and at Thomas and Erin Mills Parkway, two of the shaft locations.

Project information can be found here.  For a map of the area click here.

GreenBin

Green Bin Information

I have received a number of questions about the green bin/composting program and want to remind residents to use your green bins for all compostable material.  You can find answers to frequently asked questions such as what materials are and are not acceptable and what happens to green bin waste once it is collected by clicking here.

LakeWabu

Lake Wabukayne Floating Island Update

It has been a hard summer for the new floating island at Lake Wabukayne.  I heard from many residents that the high winds and rain caused the pods to flip over.  Our staff have been working with the contractor to find a better anchoring solution and we are confident that the new system is up to the challenge.  Many thanks to all who keep an eye on the lake and who continue to be stewards of the park and lake area by notifying me and City staff of any issues.

Meadowvale Community Centre Renovations Update

Meadowvale Community Centre is still on schedule to close for renovations in July of 2014 when River Grove Community Centre re-opens.  Staff have assured me that there should be no construction delays with the River Grove renovation.  In the event that the construction at River Grove is extended, we will do our best to ensure minimal overlap of the closures.

I held an Open House in February of this year so that residents could view the architects renderings of the new building and provide ideas and input.  This resulted in some changes and the architect was asked to revise the plans based on feedback received from residents.  I will be holding another Open House in late fall of 2013.  Stay tuned for details in my next newsletter.

Once the design is completed I will post a site where you can check the progress.

TrafficCircle
Traffic Circle Plantation/Hazelton

Work will begin in early October to construct a traffic circle at the intersection of Plantation and Hazelton.  This intersection was reviewed by traffic staff for enhanced controls and it was determined that it was a good candidate for a traffic circle.

The traffic circle on Duke of York in the downtown has been very successful and we will continue to install them where it is deemed to be the safest approach to an intersection.  There may be times during construction when the intersection will be closed but signage will be installed if this is required.

CdaPost

Canada Post Focus Group

On August 20, I attended a small focus group hosted by Canada Post to discuss the future of mail service in our community.  I received much information on how we are using the postal service and learned that Canada Post is losing money on letter mail.  Canada Post is reviewing how they provide service and the level of that service and have several options that are being explored.  These include reducing delivery to alternate days and removing all door to door delivery and putting everyone on the Super Mailbox system.  I was surprised to learn that only one third of all Canadians receive door to door delivery.

I raised some concerns over locations of these new mailboxes and stressed that there would have to be a lot of discussion with both the City and the residents before any locations were selected IF they proceed with this option.

I am sure our MPs will keep us informed as discussions proceed at Canada Post.

Pet Ownership and Off-Leash ByLaw

I have received many complaints this summer about dogs being off leash in local parks.  Dogs are required to be on leash at all times on public property and are only permitted to be off-leash in our leash-free parks.

Ward 9 is fortunate to have two leash-free parks.  There is a fenced dog run at Quinnippenon Meadows Community Park on Erin Mills Parkway adjacent to the Streetsville Pumping Station and another at Totoredaca Park which is located on Meadowvale Blvd just north of Meadowpine.

For more information on the City's Animal Services, please check here.

Meatless Mondays

Did you know that just cutting out eating meat one day a week can make an incredible difference.  Going meatless once a week may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.  It can also help reduce your carbon footprint and save precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel.  For more information please click here.

I was pleased to join children attending the St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Church Vacation Bible School on August 21st.  I enjoyed a presentation on bike safety by Peel Police Constable Julia Osborne and I had a good discussion with the children about riding their bikes as well, reminding them to use their bells.

The children had all brought their helmets and bikes and had them blessed by Father Jeff Brown.  I was also presented with three beautiful prayer shawls to give to residents in the ward who are in need of comfort and prayer and will be delivering these in the coming months.  It was a very generous thing for the church to do and I know they will be well received.

Summer Art Attack

I am so pleased that the Living Arts Centre's Summer Art Attack came to Ward 9.  This very successful program takes the arts out to the community and gets children and their parents involved in the many art forms found at the LAC.

On August 21st I attended the program at Britannia Glen Co-Op and learned some dance moves. I also helped Eden Food Bank's Peter Costello bring lunches to Art Attack prepared at the Food Bank in their new kitchen.
