WASHINGTON COUNTY RECEIVES $51,455 GRANT AWARD

Community Development Block Grant funds address critical need in Hancock, MD

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 13, 2018) – Washington County Board of Commissioners announced its award of $51,455 in Community Development Block Grant Funds by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development . The grant award will fund a much needed after-school youth program provided by the Hagerstown YMCA in Hancock, Maryland. The Town of Hancock reached out to the YMCA to address the pressing need to provide an affordable after-school program to families. The grant funds will enable the YMCA to provide a subsidy for families according to their household income on a sliding scale. This will ensure the program remains affordable to Hancock residents.

The YMCA after-school enrichment program will provide a high quality licensed program that serves as an extension of the school day with a curriculum designed to enhance the learning and development of students. “The Hagerstown Y believes that all kids have great potential. Our staff work hard every day to help them set and achieve personal and educational goals. With so many demands on today’s families, they need all the support they can get to nurture the potential of each and every child. Our after-school enrichment programs, such as the one started this school year in Hancock, focus on nurturing children’s development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn, develop healthy relationships and build confidence,” said Maria Rubeling, CEO of the Hagerstown YMCA. The YMCA’s vision for this project is to provide a meaningful experience for children and their families who otherwise would not be able to have the opportunity. The grant will be managed by the Washington County Office of Grant Management.
