Common Household Dangers For Your Pet
When you think of common dangers in the household, you might immediately think of sharp or hard objects. However, our pets are faced with more dangers in the household because what might be okay for us to eat and handle might not be okay for our furry friends. Keeping our pets safe starts with knowing what the dangers are that would hurt your four-legged family member.
- Alcohol can cause liver and kidney damages, as well as cardiac arrest.
- Avocados can be a chocking hazard to pets because of the center of an avocado.
- Chocolate, Coffee and Caffeine all contain methylxanthines, which is a substance found in cacao seeds. Effects can be anything from vomiting and diarrhea to even death. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is.
- Citrus plants contain high amounts of citric acid and essential oils that cause harmful irritation in pets.
- Grapes and Raisins can both cause kidney failure.
- Nuts including almonds, pecans, walnuts have high amounts of fats and oil. The fats are dangerous for dogs because it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even pancreatitis.
- Onions, Garlic, and Chives are harmful for their bodies. Onions can kill canine blood cells, which can be life threatening. Even just onion powder can do this; so make sure to watch what they eat. Garlic is not as harmful as onions but with larger amounts it can be just as damaging.
- Raw/Under-cooked Meat, Eggs and Bones are just as harmful to pets as they are to humans. Raw and under-cooked meats can contain bacteria's like Salmonella and E. coli. Bones are dangerous because they are a chocking hazard and also small pieces of the bone can get logged in or puncture your pet's digestive track.
- Salt and Salty Snacks can cause excessive thirst and urination or even sodium ion poisoning.
- Yeast Dough can cause gas to gather in your pets digestive system causing stomachs to bloat or potentially twist.
Pharmaceutical Dangers:
- Human Pharmaceuticals like pain relievers can restrict oxygen flow or harm their liver
- Veterinary Pharmaceuticals should only be taken when needed and should never be taken too often because they can overdose just like humans. Always check with your vet before giving your pet any medication.
Small Dangers:
- Batteries are small but the acid in them can cause serious damage. As a result, mouth ulcers, throat, and stomach issues can appear from your pet getting a hold of a battery.
- Toys can be dangerous for dogs because of the small pieces that come with them. These pieces cannot be swallowed so this can cause many problems for pets like choking.
- Plants can be dangerous if you pets lick or nibble on them so make sure they are not poisonous to your pet or keep them out of reach.
Chemical Dangers:
- Cleaning Products should be placed on a higher shelf so you pets cannot get into them because the chemicals in cleaning products like bleach can be harmful.
- Detergents could potentially give your pets ulcers or even fatal consequences.
- Antifreeze/ De-icers are neurotoxins and can cause severe neurological problems in your pet.
