Water Supply Update
The rain this winter has improved the City's water supply situation, allowing us to avoid the peak demand shortage that had been projected for summer 2017. With this updated water supply forecast, the Santa Barbara City Council lifted the mandatory lawn watering ban on March 21st and reduced the Citywide conservation target from 40 percent to 30 percent while encouraging residents and businesses to continue conservation, including minimized lawn watering. As long as our community continues to meet the 30 percent conservation target, we have sufficient supplies for the next three years. All other drought water use regulations remain in effect, including but not limited to, watering times, irrigation runoff and overspray, and more. Additional information on drought regulations and water supplies can be found here.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden was awarded the 2016 City of Santa Barbara Water Hero Award for serving as a role model for sustainable landscape practices, as well as for their recent achievement of constructing the Water Wise Home Garden and Island View Garden. Their inspiring gardens demonstrate that you can use a wide variety of California native plants to save water, add beauty to your home, and preserve the environment. To learn more about our most recent Water Hero click here.
Desalination Project Update
The Charles E. Meyer Desalination Facility is anticipated to supply water in late April/ early May 2017 and will produce nearly 3 million gallons of water per day. This is equivalent to about 30% of the City's water demand. Major construction is now complete and the facility is currently in the testing phase.  For more information on the desal facility click here.

Despite the rain, Santa Barbara remains among the small percent of California experiencing drought. Because of our semi-arid climate, conservation will always play a significant role in managing our water supply. In this episode, learn how to design a stunning water wise garden, how to properly apply compost and mulch, and how to perform a "Landscape Triage" to determine which plants to prioritize for watering.
