Rescuing "Old John"

On October 10 Bartlett Tree Experts came to the rescue of "Old John," the centuries-old oak by the milldam. Bartlett's Greg Bradshaw diagnosed the problem as leaf gall as well as lace bug, spent time in their lab coming up with a suitable treatment, and then meticulously administered it by injecting the solution directly into the tree's roots.

This is not the first time that Bartlett has provided material assistance to the Foundation. We are truly honored by their continued support of our endeavors to preserve historic Waterford and its natural environs. Our thanks to Greg and Bartlett for giving so generously of their time, expertise and materials. Thanks to their unstinting efforts, the prognosis for Old John is good!

The Foundation would like to thank all those whose combined efforts made for a successful 71st Waterford Fair. As you know, the Fair could not take place were it not for the skilled heritage artisans, the food vendors and wineries, the living history reenactors, the owners of the beautiful old homes who graciously open them to the public, and the musical acts which delight the visitors to our unique village.

Early indications are that the 2014 Waterford Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit was a good one for everyone - the artisans with record sales of their work; other Loudoun nonprofits whose fair proceeds make up a significant portion of their budget; for the food vendors, wineries, and musicians; and for the Waterford Foundation so that we can continue our mission of protecting and preserving this beautiful landmark we all love.

The Foundation is incredibly blessed to have so many dedicated volunteers who are willing to do so much on behalf of the Fair; the spirit of volunteerism which exists in the Waterford community is second to none and makes running such a huge event possible.

Thank you again for participating in the Waterford Fair. We hope to see you here again next year.

Christmas at The Corner Store

Shoppers get their last minute Christmas Shopping done .
"Christmas at the Corner Store in Waterford" took place on Saturday December 14. Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand, holiday carols set the mood, and visitors were able to shop while sampling an array of baked goods and hot cider. The store is filled with distinctive handcrafted gifts, ornaments, jewelry, clothing, home and holiday decorations, by local weavers, woodworkers, potters and other artisans.

The Corner Store is located at 40183 Main Street Waterford, Virginia, 20197.  The Corner Store is open year round and hours include Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30-4 p.m.

We would like to expand the Corner Store's hours, but we need your help to do so! If you can volunteer a few hours per week, please let us know. For more information, please contact The Waterford Foundation at, or call the Foundation office at 540-882-3018.

Please give to the Waterford Foundation's Annual Appeal!

Help the Foundation in its efforts to preserve this early American village and to realize our vision for the future of Waterford as we plan new programs and opportunities to experience the treasured buildings and landscapes of Waterford, and teach a new generation of families about rural American history.

This vision includes:

  • Initiating new hands-on history programs in our living historical community
  • Implementing cellphone walking tours of historic Waterford
  • Offering the opportunity for visitors to interact with period interpreters
  • Augmenting our programming and exhibits on the African-American experience in Waterford, as well as the village's unique role during the Civil War
  • Developing an educational program on early technology centered on the soon-to-be-restored Waterford mill
  • Examining the story of the Quakers in Waterford and their impact on agricultural practices and the African-American community

Your gift will make our vision a reality. We need your help more than ever to continue our dual mission of preservation and education. So as we head into the holiday season, I ask that you consider making an end-of-year contribution as part of our annual giving campaign.

Your donation of any amount is greatly appreciated, whether it's $25, $250, or $2,500.  Donate Today

It's also tax-deductible!

On behalf of the board, the staff, and the membership of the Foundation, thank you for your support of Waterford and for ensuring that this remains a special place.

Staff Announcement
The Waterford Foundation is pleased to welcome Lisa Thompson to the staff as our new Fair Director! She brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as a Main Street Manager in Paducah, Kentucky, where she planned and executed a 13 week summer concert series, inaugurated a national-model Artist Relocation Program and partnered with a number of cultural organizations in the community. Prior to that she managed the business-end of Tudor Place, a historic house museum in Georgetown, and owned her own business.

We look forward to working with her and hearing her ideas on how we can make the Waterford Fair even better!

On February 14, bring your favorite Valentine to the Foundation's first Sweetheart Ball at Belmont Country Club. Swing to the big band sounds of the Martinsburg Jazz Orchestra, plus all inclusive dinner and drinks and fabulous auction items.

The Sweetheart Ball will have it All! Join the fun.
