The Taste Hawaii Tour
with Chef Alan Wong and food historian Arnold Hiura
James Beard Award-winning chef Alan Wong and Hawaii food historian Arnold Hiura will bring a taste of the Islands to the San Francisco Bay Area with their "Taste Hawaii" Tour. The duo will offer six events in San Francisco and San Jose between October 27 and November 2, all open to the public, sharing the cuisine and food culture of Hawaii. Attendees will learn about the evolution of the Islands' unique culinary landscape and how it has inspired Chef Alan. Guests will also have the opportunity to taste Hawaii...literally! Chef Alan and Arnold, assisted by Hukilau Restaurants, will serve dishes from Chef's newest cookbook, The Blue Tomato: The Inspirations behind the Cuisine of Alan Wong, and classic Hawaii fare featured in Arnold's book, Kau Kau: Cuisine & Culture in the Hawaiian Islands. Events range in price from free to $75 and include activities such as "talk-story" book signings, cooking demonstrations, culinary exercises and tasting events, culminating in a "Birthday Bash" celebration for Chef Alan with a trip to Hawaii giveaway.
VISIT WWW.THEBLUETOMATO.NET/TASTEHAWAIITOUR for complete event details and ticket purchase. Give the gift of rice!
|
September is National Rice Month, and we want you to join us in celebrating Hawaii's favorite grain at the 2011 Hawaii Rice Festival on Sunday, September 11 at Magic Island! The festival runs 10AM - 6PM, with plenty of entertainment and...rice!
Contributors to The Hawaii Book of Rice will demonstrate recipes and battle it out in the Rice-ipe Contest for cash prizes, rice and bragging rights as the year's Rice-ipe Champion! See our blog post for more details on who'll be cooking what and when.
Stop by our booth and purchase an autographed copy of The Hawaii Book of Rice by Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi. A portion of each book purchased will go to the Festival's two charitable beneficiaries, the Hawaii Foodbank and Lanakila Meals on Wheels. Buy a book and receive a complimentary Book of Rice rice paddle! We'll also have unique gift sets for sale: just $18 for a copy of The Hawaii Book of Rice, a rice paddle and a Cane Haul Road dish towel featuring an "Ochazuke" design (see photo; total retail value $24.95).

Rice Bowl Art Contest Winners
 |
Our First Place Rice Bowl, by Grayson K. We love how he drew each grain of rice!
| ...And speaking of rice...our Rice Bowl Art Contest at Kualoa's Keiki Arts & Reading Festival in August received over 80 entries from aspiring artists. Hawaii Book of Rice author Cheryl Chee Tsutsumi, who hosted the coloring activity for the children, loved seeing how creative the kids got with their artwork. We saw white rice, brown rice, red rice, blue rice and rainbow rice! And a handful of entries also featured veggies in their fried rice -- who says kids don't like eating healthy?
Our winners, by popular vote, are:
First Place: Grayson K., age 7, of Kalihi (Entry #41) Second Place: Shane C., age 4, of Kaneohe (Entry #33) Third Place: Shannon G., age 8, and Megan G., age 5, of Kaneohe (Entries #11 and #12); a tie between sisters, so their family wins all around!
Be sure to see the entire gallery of artwork at our blog!
