 Opening of 2017 Bow Season

BOWHUNTING NYC WATERSHED LANDS
With bowhunting season just around the corner, it's a great time to scout for that perfect spot for your tree stand. NYC DEP has more than 130,000 acres of land open to the public for recreation. Most DEP lands are open as Public Access Areas, which allow all types of hunting; however, some properties are restricted to hunting by bow-only. This restriction is typically in place where hunting by firearms is not feasible for safety reasons.

Hunters can easily find bow-only areas by using the DEP Rec Mapper. When you visit the site, you will see some tabs located just below the map. If you click on the Recreation Units tab, you'll notice a column called "hunt details." This is where special conditions, such as bow-only areas, are listed.  Here's a quick tip: you can sort this column and scroll down until you see all of the bow-only areas together. If you double click on the rec unit name, the interactive map will zoom to that property. The table also provides information on each parcel's acreage, county, municipality, and NYS DEC Wildlife Management Unit. You can even print a map to take with you in the field.

Deer hunting is an important tool in DEP's toolbox for sustainable forest management. On DEP lands that are open for bow hunting only, hunters have a unique experience while also providing an important service for the protection of forest health and water quality.
