Celebrates Grand Opening Weekend

In mid July, the Winter Haven community came out in full force to support the grand opening of the Better Now Health Center in Winter Haven. The new facility is operated by Watson Clinic and provides primary care services exclusively for Florida Blue members or those with a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan.

The weekend celebration began with a special ribbon-cutting and presentation ceremony, during which Watson Clinic CEO Dr. Louis S. Saco took to the podium to discuss our excitement in branching out into the Winter Haven area under partnership with Florida Blue.

The festivities continued for the remainder of the weekend as visitors were given personal wellness evaluations and guided tours through the Florida Blue retail facility and the Better Now Health Center. Outside, guests enjoyed delicious organic catering, carnival-like games of skill, and festive musical entertainment. They also gathered to hear an assortment of health-related presentations delivered by the following Watson Clinic specialists -- Drs. Serge Jean/ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery, David Remmer/Family Medicine, Douglas Shenkman/Orthopaedics, James Mammel/OB-GYN, John Bradshaw/Radiology and Phuc Vo/Orthopaedics.

Better Now Health Center is staffed by Watson Clinic family medicine providers David J. Remmer, MD, and Bettye Brown, ARNP-C, and offers services to all Blue Cross and Blue Shield members age 2 and up, including those with BlueMedicare Advantage or BlueMedicare Supplement. Extended weekday and Saturday office hours are available, as well as on-site laboratory and x-ray capability designed to make the patient care process especially convenient and thorough.

Safety Tips for Summer Mosquito Season

The mosquito population grows in the summer, which is the time of year many residents and visitors are outdoors enjoying Florida's beautiful natural landscape and many attractions.

Mosquitoes are usually most active during dusk and dawn. Current reports show average mosquito activity for this time of year; however, recent heavy rainfalls in our area may cause an increase in mosquito activity. Please visit our website for steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

Tips to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses

With the temperatures beginning to rise, the Polk County Health Department urges people to take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, including heat stress, exhaustion, and stroke. More than 3,000 people are seen each year in emergency rooms for heat-related illnesses.

If left untreated, heat exhaustion may progress to heat stroke, which occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature.

Do not leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle. The temperature inside a vehicle can reach 135 degrees in less than ten minutes. To read more on heat-related illnesses, please visit our website.

Local Physicist Presents at International Conference

Zejian Liu, PhD, DABRmedical physicist at the Center for Cancer Care & Research, recently had the honor of presenting on an international stage at the prestigious World Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering conference in Beijing, China. His presentation focused on a new device he invented that ensures improved accuracy in image-guided radiation therapy.

"The concern with radiation therapy is in exposing the normal, healthy tissue around the tumor," says Dr. Liu. "This tool assists in making certain the radiation exposure is limited to the tumor itself, while sparing the healthy tissue."

The presentation was based upon Dr. Liu's abstract titled 'A Fast and Robust Approach to Routine Quality Assurance of Image-Guided Rapicarc Radiation Therapy.' Watson Clinic congratulates Dr. Liu on this presentation. We're proud to feature experts who are leaders in their respective fields.
