We Know The Importance of Girl Scouts
A Message From Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida CEO, Lisa Johnson
Thank you to all of our girls, volunteers, families, and supporters who have spoken out recently about the important role that Girl Scouts plays in a girl's life. The recent decision of Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to open its program to girls is not in the best interests of girls. Offering hands-on, girl-led, girl-centered learning in STEM, the outdoors and entrepreneurship and providing girls with the opportunity to develop invaluable life skills, Girl Scouts helps all girls take the lead early and often. And we're backed by more than 100 years of experience and expertise in the field. Mounting research continues to support the unparalleled value of single-gender environments that provide girls a safe space in which to explore their potential and take the lead without the distractions or pressures that can be found in a coed environment.

Girl Scouts is the organization creating the female leadership pipeline. Simply put, Girl Scouting works. It is the best experience for girls in the world because it is girl-led. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida is more committed than ever to ensuring that girls take their rightful place as leaders in their communities, their country, and the world. For us, girls are not an afterthought. Everything we do is designed with girls, by girls, and for girls. We are girl experts, and we work every day to help girls develop the courage, confidence, and character so that they will make the world a better place.

Never is this more evident than in our Gold Award Girl Scouts. Earned by just 6 percent of Girl Scouts annually, this prestigious honor requires girls to demonstrate their leadership skills by tackling a community or global issue and developing a plan for long-term sustainability.

Earlier this month, I attended our 2017 National Convention: G.I.R.L. 2017 in Columbus, Ohio with an incredible group of girl and adult delegates, Girl Scout volunteers, and more. Meeting this year's National Young Women of Distinction and learning about their Gold Award projects that are truly making a different around the globe was absolutely inspiring and just re-affirms our commitment to providing girls in our community the opportunities and skills to follow in their footsteps.

Today we urge our Girl Scout members, alumnae, volunteers, program partners, and supporters to continue to speak up on behalf of our exceptional experiences for girls. For too long, we have been reserved in our approach to talking about the benefits of Girl Scouting, rather than proudly and loudly sharing the stories of impact that our girl members and volunteers make in their communities. Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida looks forward to an outstanding year ahead, and invite all of you to engage with us. Come along as we ensure that even more girls have access to Girl Scouting and that the world understands what a difference it makes in their lives.

Girl Scouts took to the night sky at a recent Society of Women Engineers workshop. These go-getters earned their Legacy "Sky" Badge. They enjoyed a fun evening of stargazing, campfire and s'mores, investigated the science of skies and figure out ways to help clear sky pollution.
