You don't want to miss these heartwarming Sadie Fund success stories!

  AUGUST 2015 NEWSLETTER

The fund is named for Sadie, a wonderful little dog that was surrendered to the shelter because her owner couldn't afford her medical care. Sadie's medical expenses really added up, so in her honor, we named our medical care fund after her. Each year, the Animal Welfare Society spends approximately $150,000 on medical and veterinary care.  Please support the Sadie Fund to help us provide the care injured and sick animals deserve.

SADIE FUND SUCCESS STORIES

WALKER

A Good Samaritan found Walker, a handsome black and white cat, during a snowstorm, freezing on the side of the road. When he arrived at AWS, he was thin, dehydrated and so cold his body was rigid. Shelter staff put him on heating pads, wrapped him in blankets and gave him warmed food. They also started an IV to relieve his dehydration. Once he perked up, they realized his tail had succumbed to frostbite. Thanks to the Sadie Fund, Walker was able to have surgery to remove his tail so it wouldn't get infected. After he recovered, he returned to being a cheerful, active cat and was adopted into a new family in April.

HAZELNUT

Hazelnut, a 12 year old senior dog, came to AWS after being surrendered to a local Animal Control Officer.  She presented with serious hair loss and skin infections.  With assistance from the Sadie Fund, AWS staff was able to get her quickly to a veterinarian, who prescribed several oral medications including antibiotics, medicated skin wipes and bath treatments for her.   Slowly, Hazelnut's skin improved.  She was a staff favorite and enjoyed relaxing in the break room.  Before too long, she was adopted into her new home!

URSULA & PARIS

Ursula and Paris arrived at AWS after being left in a vacant home for more than two weeks.  Both were overrun with fleas and were emaciated.  Paris, a 2 year old cat, needed surgery to fix an untreated injury on one of her hind legs. Ursula, a 12 year old dog, needed extensive treatments for skin lesions.  She also needed to have  dental work including teeth extractions.

Thanks to the Sadie Fund, this pair received the treatments they needed - and deserved.   Both were adopted into new homes just before Christmas!

PRECIOUS

Precious, a two year old Pug/Chihuahua, came to AWS after being abandoned at a local veterinarian's office.  Her skin was in terrible shape and she was in pain.  She had several veterinary appointments and endured multiple skin scrapes and biopsies. Because of the Sadie Fund, we were able to get Precious the much-needed medical attention to diagnose food, environment and flea allergies and get her on a treatment plan. While at AWS, Precious spent time in foster care, where she received a special diet, daily medicated baths and oral medication.  With time and loving care, her skin improved, allowing her beautiful personality to shine through.  A favorite among staff and volunteers, Precious was adopted after being featured on AWS' Facebook page.

LUKE

A Good Samaritan found Luke, a friendly 8 year old male cat, on the side of the road and called animal control. He was brought to AWS and seen by a vet who diagnosed mild bilateral entropion of the lower lids. This uncomfortable condition causes the eye lids to curve inwards and eventually can lead to reduced vision. Using the Sadie Fund, this condition was repaired by removing a small piece of tissue from each lower lid.
Luke recovered for a while in a foster home and is now available for adoption at AWS.

SISAL

Sisal, a sweet and quiet senior cat, came to the shelter after being picked up as a stray from a local animal control officer.  She presented with a grape-sized cyst on her head.  During her veterinary appointment for the cyst, it was revealed that she needed dental work. Because of the Sadie Fund, Sisal was able to get the medical care she needed!  Her cyst was surgically removed and she had several broken teeth extracted.  She is now recovering from her surgery and is available for adoption at AWS.
