Students Advocate for Adult Literacy

Adult Education Students participated in the 10th Annual Adult Literacy Awareness Day at the Massachusetts State House on March 31, 2016. Over 400 students, graduates, and supporters of adult basic education (ABE) gathered and advocated for the need to increase funding for the ABE line item in the state budget. Following the rally, students met with elected officials to share how ABE programs have improved their lives. We are proud of our students for demonstrating civic engagement in the community!

Developing Workforce Skills for Youth

BCNC employs Teen Staff during the school year and summer through funding from the Department of Youth Engagement and Employment. Through training and mentoring, we develop youth's workforce skills through employment. Meet a couple of our 2016 Teen Staff: Tyler is a sophomore at Boston Latin Academy and Lily is a senior at Boston Latin School.Tyler assisted in teaching youth leadership and public speaking skills and Lily assisted with art-based projects and the College Access Program. Both Tyler and Lily learned the importance of taking responsibility for your work and adhering to deadlines.

Parent-Child Reading Club
We have partnered with Boston Public Schools Parent University to provide a 6-week Parent-Child Reading Club for 2nd & 3rd graders and their parents. Together families read the well-known Chinese legend, "Mulan," and "Grandfather Counts," a book that touches on cross-cultural and generational issues faced by a bi-cultural family. To encourage active learning, staff incorporated activities such as role-playing characters, learning the proper use of holding/using chopsticks, and Chinese calligraphy.
Promoting Financial Literacy

Thanks to the support of Citizens Bank, we are improving financial literacy though our Build a Better Life program. Over 40 participants have received education on financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Topics included: banking services, buying a car, paying for college, credit and credit cards, taxes and saving for the future.

BCNC Executive Director, Giles Li, joined the State Treasurer's Task Force on Financial Literacy . The Task Force worked together to release a Report on Financial Literacy in MA: A Roadmap to Economic Empowerment.
