Botched 1099-Bs, Form 8949 Differences, Tax Prep Tips, Extensions & MTM Elections

Join us for a Webinar on March 28

Space is limited.

Join CPAs Robert Green and Darren Neuschwander, Managing Members of Green NFH, LLC, and John Padgett, TradeLog Accountant at Green NFH, LLC.

In this Webinar:

You won't get this education anywhere else: Learn about the cost-basis reporting crisis and how you should handle it on your 2011 tax return filings. Brokers aren't admitting they botched their 1099-Bs and prepared them under a different set of tax rules than what taxpayers use for tax return preparation.

* Padgett will demonstrate the newest version of TradeLog, built to deal with Form 8949 and new cost-basis reporting on 1099-Bs. Padgett will show common differences displayed on Form 8949 between trade-accounting results and 1099-Bs, including wash sale losses, "covered" vs. "non-covered securities," and other problems. We encourage attendees to share their Form 8949, 1099-B and trade accounting issues. The panelists will discuss these problems and offer solutions.

* Neuschwander will show how our CPAs work with TradeLog results, Forms 8949,  Schedule D, Schedule C (trader tax status expenses), Form 6781 (1256 contracts), Form 4797 (Section 475 MTM business traders), our important "income transfer" strategy and tax return footnotes. Neuschwander will demonstrate how our CPAs prepare extensions for April 15 - the wise course of action this year with the cost-basis reporting crisis unresolved.

* Green will explain the benefits of Section 475 MTM for business securities traders, including ordinary loss treatment and exemption from wash sale losses. The 2012 Section 475 MTM elections are due April 15 - Green will discuss the pros and cons of this election, and important tax strategies for climbing out of a hole of large capital loss carryovers.

Tax Filing on Trades: It May Pay to Wait

By THERESA W. CAREY | MORE ARTICLES BY AUTHOR (Ms. Carey's "Annual Best Online Broker's Survey"was the Barron's cover story on March 12, 2012)

"There's confusion among our readers on how to file the newly revised 1099-B from brokers, especially those with multiple trading accounts. It's worth getting an extension on your filing deadline to win time to work out the revised wash-sale and capital-gains regimen. A CPA may be of help." Click here to read the full article.
2011 Tax Preparation:
There is still time to sign up with us for your 2011 tax return preparation. We are preparing extensions at this late date, also due to complications of Form 8949.

Very few tax professionals in the country specialize in serving business traders. We are the leading firm --read why you should consider us this tax season. Savings start at around $8,000 and only go up!

Preparation and planning of federal and state income tax returns for traders (retail, proprietary, hedge funds, and management companies [both individuals and entities]) is our core business.

In our tax preparation service, we distinguish between investors and business traders. Click here to read about the difference on our sign up page for investors. This page is for business traders to sign up on.

Don't forget new Section 475 MTM elections are due by April 15, too.
Excerpt from our blog about cost-basis reporting problems: Making a Section 475 MTM election could be tricky based on using unreliable tax information. It can affect your decision to file or skip the Section 475 MTM election. Generally, we recommend Section 475 MTM on securities only, providing the business trader doesn't have capital loss carryovers. Traders need capital gains to use up capital loss carryovers, not Section 475 MTM ordinary income. On the other hand, wash sales from 2011 can be converted into Section 475 MTM ordinary losses in 2012 with a MTM election.
