Traffic Safety Reminders
Welcome back to Ascension School. Please keep the safety of all children in mind when driving and walking around the school.  Cross at corners where there are crossing guards. Do not park on the east side of Clarence Avenue it is reserved for dropping students off and leaving. If you plan to park and stay, park on the west side of Clarence.  Students should arrive no earlier than 7:50 AM to line up for school.  
It's Been a Big Week - Wine Not?
We’re ready to celebrate the beginning of a new year! Leave the kids at home and join us for a glass of wine! Everyone is invited Thursday night for an evening of refreshments at Allison & Kip Meyer's beautiful home.

A suggested donation of $10 will support this year's Blue Tie Auction. Your gift will automatically enter you in a raffle to win a complimentary ticket to the event.

Van Gogh Picture Day – Friday, 8/31/18
Van Gogh Photographers is taking photographs of all students in PK3 to grade 7 on Friday, 8/31/18.  Students in K to 7 will be photographed in their uniforms. The office staff will send order forms home for each child this Friday, 8/24/18. Ordering is not mandatory. You can order using the order form or on line, but you need to complete the form and return it to your child’s teacher. It is used for identification purposes. Once the proofs of photos are returned to the school we will schedule a re-take day for those who were absent or want a retake. Contact the office at 708-386-7282 with questions.
Box Tops for Education
We thank everyone who collected them over the summer and we ask you to collect them from General Mills products going forward. Each Box Top is worth ten-cents (cash) for the school. Just send them to school in your child’s backpack.  
Virtus Training for New Volunteers 
Register online at www.virtusonline.org. The session will be held in the Pine Room from 7PM to 9:30PM on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Any person who wants to volunteer with children at the school or parish must be Virtus trained.  
Fall Sports' Registration
Ascension Co-ed Soccer – Grades 3-8
Registration is now open for Ascension Fall Soccer! Students in grades 3-8 are encouraged to join one of our school’s most popular sports! Season runs late August through late October. The official practice schedule will be out soon and the game schedule will be out later this month.

Grade 3 & 4- Team will meet 1-2 times per week, games played on Thursdays-Saturday, registration fee includes team shirt.

Grade 5- Teams meet 3-5 times per week for practices and games. Registration fee includes team shirt. Players are required to wear team jerseys/shorts/socks to all games.

Grades 6-8- Teams meet 3-5 times per week for practices and games. Players are required to wear team jerseys/shorts/socks to all games.

Ascension Co-ed Cross Country – Grades 5-8
Come be a part of Ascension's fastest sport! Ascension Cross Country will be starting practice on August 21 for the Fall season. We will practice twice a week (Tues/Thurs) from 6:00 - 7:15 at Barrie Park.

Our season lasts only 1 month as we have a meet every Saturday in September. Meets start early on Saturday morning and generally don't interfere with soccer games.

You need only to run in 1 meet to qualify for the championship race on September 29th.

The cross country coaches understand that there are many fall sports and we will accommodate you playing those sports. Please feel free to talk to us about your scheduling concerns.

Cub Scouts
Ascension Pack #20 Cub Scouts Pack for 1st through 5th grades will be kicking off our 2018-2019 year with our first Pack meeting on Friday, September 14 at 6:30pm in the Pine Room. We look forward to welcoming back Cub Scouts from last year, and also welcoming any prospective new members. If you have any questions, please reach out to Matt Mueller or Jason Dols to learn more.
AWC Oktoberfest
Please join the Ascension community on the parish green on Sunday September 9th from 12-5pm for a family friendly fair. Activities include a Buddha Belly Yoga class, the Book Bike from Public Library, balloon animals and face painting, and an obstacle course bounce house.  Kid friendly meals and adult friendly beverages will be served. Cash or check only please.
Parish Ministry Fair
School families, please join us on Sunday, August 26 following all morning Masses for our annual Ministry Fair & Hospitality! 8:30 am - 1 pm in the Ascension School Pine Room (enter off of Van Buren street).

Submit Your H&S Form and Pay Dues Online
Forms were sent home with the summer packet, but if you haven't yet returned yours to the office, you can submit it online here. The Home and School mission is to offer a variety of programs and resources throughout the year to build community and school spirit, enrich the student academic experience, boost parent and guardian involvement, facilitate connections between Ascension students, families, faculty and staff and show support and gratitude to our wonderful teachers. We could not do this without your help! Pay your dues online here or send a check made out to Ascension Home and school into the office to ensure you receive a school directory.
NEW Room Parent Volunteer Opportunities!
New this year, we have expanded the Room Parent role into four defined positions:
  • Events Coordinator: Coordinate parties and in-class events
  • Communications Coordinator: Communicate upcoming class events and special school   announcements to the class families
  • Social Coordinator: Organize social events for class families outside of the school day
  • Ambassador: Serve as a resource to all new families in the class

NEW Fundraising Opportunity!
We will once again offer our Charleston Wrap fundraiser in the fall, but new this year we have also partnered with Mabel's Labels for an additional fundraising opportunity. Mabel's Labels are durable, personalized, peel and stick labels that safely go in the laundry, dishwasher and microwave. They are perfect for keeping track of all your kids' stuff - from shoes and clothes to water bottles, lunch boxes, backpacks and more. 20% of all proceeds will go to H&S. Labels can be ordered here and will be shipped (for FREE!) directly to you. Just be sure to select "Ascension School (Oak Park)" from the drop-down menu, so that our school is credited for the purchase.
