Parashat Balak
Numbers 22:2 - 25:9
Balak is the name of the king of Moab. He feels threatened by the Israelite nation and wants a soothsayer, Bil’am to curse them. God at first forbids Bi’lam to do this, but then allows he only to say what God puts in his mouth. On the way, Bil’am’s donkey sees an angel in the road that he does not, and Bil’am beat him for stopping on the path. The donkey protests his treatment. (Yes, a talking donkey!) Ultimately, instead of cursing the Israelites, Bil’am blesses them, much to Balak’s chagrin. Bil’am’s blessing is the famous words that start our morning service – “ Ma Tovu – How good are your tents, O Jacob; your dwelling places, O Israel!”

Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not really working. Just when things seem their most bleak, Sang Ly learns a secret about the ill-tempered rent collector who comes demanding money--a secret that sets in motion a tide that will change the life of everyone it sweeps past. The Rent Collector is a story of hope, of one woman’s journey to save her son and another woman’s chance at redemption. It demonstrates that even in a dump in Cambodia--perhaps especially in a dump in Cambodia--everyone deserves a second chance.
