Setting SMART Goals

Take a moment to consider this question: What are the top 3 things you want to achieve during business school?

Responses like "Finishing my degree" or "Increasing my network" are too vague to really be of use to you. This is the $500K question, so it is worth spending time (say, half an hour?) to really give it some thought.

Now is the time to come up with the first 3 goals for the next 24 months of your life. Are there particular people you would like to get to know? Is there a special place you want to visit? Are you hoping to make strides towards starting a new business?

If so, your goals might look like this:

  • Goal 1: Meet XYZ person by the end of my first semester.
  • Goal 2: Visit Dubai (perhaps even get a summer internship there) no later than halfway through my second year.
  • Goal 3: Decide which of my three business ideas to pursue, find at least one partner to get involved, and participate in the Venture Challenge to determine long-term viability of our plan.

If you want to really make the most of your time in business school, you need to define your goals, as well as how you plan to achieve them!

This week, we are providing you with an MBA goal-setting tool. Utilizing the SMART framework outlined here, you can really articulate your goals, which will help you get started on the right foot and, ultimately, increase your chance of achieving them.

We'll check in with you about your MBA goals from time to time, but you would be well-served to come up with other means of keeping them at the front of your mind. Our most successful clients have kept their goals visible from their desk throughout business school. Some students have even shared them with a small group of 3-4 other students; you may find that creating a team that supports your goals (and holds you to them) can be particularly valuable.

The 100 Week Sprint was designed to help elite professionals like you who want to really make the most of their investment in business school. If you know other MBA students who would benefit from the 100 Week Sprint, please forward this email using the link below, or encourage them to subscribe themselves.
