WEEK 1 FOOTBALL RANKINGS

Packers take top spot in Class 7A

In Class AAAAAAA, Colquitt County jumped to No. 1 after posting a 41-7 victory over McEachern in the MetroPCS Corky Kell Classic. North Gwinnett also won big over Brookwood (37-2), but the Packers depth and defensive dominance gives them the edge in this week's poll. Grayson replaces Archer at No. 3 after the Tigers lost 21-19 to Milton, and Milton jumped up to No. 5.

Defending-champion Lee County had a sloppy start to its season-opener against Dougherty before righting the ship to win 47-6 at Albany State. The Trojans fell behind 6-0 while losing four fumbles and having two touchdowns denied because of penalties. However, once Lee County got its bearings, the top-ranked Trojans controlled the game. Coffee remains at the No. 2 spot following its 20-7 victory over Brunswick. Tucker, previously third, fell to ninth after being beaten 40-14 by Buford in the Corky Kell Classic at Georgia State Stadium. Valdosta, previously unranked, debuts into the top-5 this week with a dominant 45-27 victory over Jackson-Atlanta. Harrison climbed from tenth of fifth this week following its 48-0 victory over Lassiter. Stephenson, which opened the season with a 39-12 victory against Columbia, is seventh this week. Lanier enters at tenth this week after its 47-0 victory over Peachtree Ridge.

In Class AAAAA, No. 1 Rome extended its winning streak to 28 games with a 51-41 victory over Marietta last Thursday. No. 2 Buford topped Tucker 40-14 to remain behind Rome at No. 2. Griffin and Villa Rica fell out of this week's top 10 and were replaced by Ware County and Jones County at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

In Class AAAA, No. 1 Blessed Trinity scored a 35-13 win over St. Pius and Mary Persons jumped to No. 2 after scoring a 42-0 win over Gainesville. Cartersville made a statement at No. 3 with a 35-0 win over Allatoona and Flowery Branch jumped to No. 4 after posting a 70-6 win over East Hall. Troup replaced Cedartown in the rankings and debuts at No. 9.

The usual suspects are staying at the top in Class AAA. With top-ranked Calhoun's 45-21 victory over Ridgeland in the Corky Kell Classic at Rome's Barron Stadium on Thursday let the state know that, in AAA, the defend-champion Yellow Jackets are the team to beat. Peach County, which opens its season against Northside-Warner Robins at Mercer on Saturday, is the No. 2 ranked team in the class. Greater Atlanta Christian is third following it's closely contested victory over Lovett on Friday. Fourth-ranked Cedar Grove set two out-of-state games in its first two weeks - Summerville (S.C.) and Hewitt-Trussville (AL) - and following its 21-7 victory over Summerville, the Saints could challenge any team in the class.

Hapeville Charter has yet to play a game but holds the No. 1 ranking again this week. Heard County, previously third, moved up to second following Rabun's slide to ninth. Thomasville, which was ranked fourth in the preseason rankings, climbed one spot. Brooks County, fourth last week, climbed one spot this week.

Defending-champion ELCA is still the team to beat in A-Private with Athens Academy again ranked second this week. Prince Avenue, Mount Paran Christian and Stratford Academy round out the top-5. Calvary Day, a quality Savannah program is threatening to move into the top-5 with a solid showing this week. Fellowship Christian, in Parker Conley's second season as head coach, has brought his team into the top-10 at No. 9.

In Class A-Public, Emanuel County Institute dropped to No. 10 after a 42-7 loss to Dublin and Macon County exited the poll after getting toppled by No. 6 Pelham 35-0. Commerce replaces Macon County and debuts at No. 9.
