Week 10 (B week)
Aug 14th, 2014

LotfotL is now certified organic!

LotFotL in the Quick!
Below are the highlights that we would like to make sure our members know about on the farm.

Delivery Details:  This weeks deliveries include:
  • Weekly Gonzo and Staple
  • "B week" Flip-flop, See-saw, Eggs and Chicken
Where's the Basil? For those of you that have Staple and Flip-flop shares that were expecting basil last week, and opened your box to find it missing, you may have noticed that we had to substitute summer squash.  We had high hopes for the basil yield, but it fell a bit short. Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. We will make every effort to get you a pesto sized basil bunch in the upcoming weeks.

Beef!  We currently have grass fed beef steaks left in the freezer. I have put 10 lb steak boxes up for sale on the online farm store.  Expect more options later this fall when the next animals are ready.

Feeling Forlorn? Enjoy Some Organic Corn!

Corn, or as it's known in the scientific community, Zea mays (a reflection of corn's traditional name, maize), is a grain that is commonly mistaken for a vegetable. This grain was domesticated over 8,000 years ago in Central America and has many different subspecies and varieties - from yellow and white to pink, purple, blue, red, and black. Over 70% of the corn in the US has been genetically modified by making the plant herbicide-tolerant or insect-resistant. While there have been no large-scale human research studies on the effects of these modifications, there are still potential health risks. Another health risk of conventionally grown corn is pesticide residue. To avoid any potential health risks, purchase certified organic corn as it does not contain any genetic engineering or unsafe pesticides. To store corn, wrap whole ears (with husks) in plastic or place in an airtight container in the fridge. If you wish to freeze corn, blanch the ears for about five minutes and either place the whole ear into a freezer bag for up to one year or remove the kernels from the cob and freeze for two to three months.

Friends of the Farm: Riverwest Co-op

Riverwest Co-op is a grocery and cafe located in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. The grocery opened in November of 2001 and features organic, local, and fair-trade products. The cafe, featuring many vegetarian and vegan options, opened its doors in October of 2004 and uses the same food that's sold in the grocery in its menu (including LotfotL produce!). Both aspects of the co-op are member owned and run by volunteers with the mission of providing "food for people, not for profit." The co-op boasts over 3,000 members and with benefits like a 5% store discount (even more if you volunteer) and the ability to place special orders, who wouldn't want to be one? Did we mention membership is fairly inexpensive? Members pay just $100 over a lifetime or a minimum of $20 per year for five years. The co-op also features some great weekly specials including 10% off produce on Wednesdays and 10% off bulk items on Thursdays. So, next time you visit our friends at Riverwest Co-op thank them for supporting your farm. LotFotL.

Melon Stuff
My melon was awesome and we ate it right up:  Great!  We get a lot of comments like this. That is why, despite the obstacles in getting melons to our CSA members, we take our chances and send them out.

My melon was broken:  We do the best we can to safely cradle your fragile melons into your boxes, but occasionally there is a mishap.  If you give us a call we will do our best to find a way to replace it.

My melon was not ripe:  We use every trick we know to harvest healthy ripe melons, but short of cutting them open ourselves, we will occasionally misjudge this fruit.  Let us know and we will see what we can do about replacements.

My melon was rotten:  We suggest that you put melon on your eat me first list when you pick up the boxes.  Being melons are very perishable, we occasionally send one out that looks and feels great when it is packed and by the time it gets to you it has started to go bad.  If when you remove it from the box, it is not edible, please let us know.

Cool Summer Cucumber
Melon Salad!

INGREDIENTS

3 lbs of melon cubed (we like the green fleshed Galia, but cantelope or watermelon would also work)
1 Cup sliced cucumber
2 T extra-virgin olive oil
2 T lime juice
Salt and pepper
1/4 Cup Basil leaves
Feta Cheese crumbles

DIRECTIONS

Mix the melon, cucumber, and basil in a bowl.  Add olive oil and lime juice and salt and pepper and toss.  Top with feta cheese before serving.

The Dirt on the Farm: Summer Squash aka Zucchini Overload

This is the time of year where people start finding baskets and bags full of zucchini mysteriously showing up at their front doors because their desperate, green-thumbed neighbor can't keep up with all of those summer squash that are pouring in off the vines. If you are like me, over the years you have accumulated a pile of zucchini recipes to help you put up a good fight when it comes to reaping this harvest. We have already had some great recipes shared this year from our members and welcome you to post your ideas on our Facebook page or email them to customerservice@lotfotl.com.
