Brussels Sprouts are Really from Brussles?

Brussels sprouts, a member of the Brassica family with its cousins broccoli and cabbage, is thought to originate in late 16th century Belgium near the capital of Brussels. The plant spread from there to Europe and the US during World War I. Most varieties of this mini-cabbage filled, tree-like plant are green in color, but some varieties contain a bit of a red tint. Look for plants with firm, compact, and vivid green sprouts and store untrimmed and unwashed in the veggie crisper drawer. If freezing is your desire, trim and steam for 3-5 minutes and freeze for up to one year. Just one cup of brussels sprouts contains 243% of your daily recommended Vitamin K and 129% of you Vitamin C. Brussels sprouts also support your body's detox, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory systems. To best support your digestive system, steamed brussels sprouts can be eaten and will bind better to your digestive acids than if you would eat them raw.

Friends of the Farm: Goodkind Restaurant & Bar

Goodkind restaurant, owned by Jess and William (BJ) Seidel, is situated in the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee. Goodkind was named after the 1940s Wisconsin cannery and even uses its slogan, "All to the good and the best of its kind." The newly opened restaurant/bar is located in the former home of Mama Demarinis, but bears no resemblance to the former pizza joint. Instead, the place was remodeled with old barn boards and upcycled materials like mirrors and hardwood tables. The seasonal menu (featuring some of LotfotL's produce), created by chefs Paul Zerkel and Lisa Kirkpatrick (formerly of Odd Duck and Roots Restaurant and Cellar), is according to Lisa, a "modern take on European farmhouse fare. The restaurant is open Wednesday to Monday from 5 pm to 1 am, but the bar operates from 4 pm to 2 am. Stop by Goodkind today and check out their take on seasonal eating or check out their Facebook page. Thanks for being a friend of the farm, Goodkind!

The Buzz on the Farm: Honey Love

Yesterday and today we are extracting the majority of the 2014 honey, gifted from the girls in our bee sanctuary.  Beekeeper April ran 12 hives this year, most of which were started from new packages this year.  Last winter was hard on the hives and of the 8 that went into winter, only 4 came through strong enough to carry into this year on their own. She introduced a number of new alternative holistic methods to her practices this year, including small cell and foundationless hives. Every year the tiny teachers have new life lessons to instill upon their keeper; patience and acceptance being some from this year.  Read More
