Week 13 (A week)
Sept. 4th, 2014

LotfotL is now certified organic!

LotFotL in the Quick!
Below are the highlights that we would like to make sure our members know about on the farm.

Delivery Details:  This weeks deliveries include:
  • Weekly Gonzo and Staple
  • "A week" Flip-flop, See-saw, Eggs and Chicken
Fruit:  White peaches will arrive this Thursday.  Fruit is coming in very ripe this season and needs attention quickly.  The sooner you can get to your drop site to retrieve them the better.  We suggest that you refrigerate and/or process asap.

Coming soon apples and maybe pears if we are lucky.  Watch for more details.

Melons: We are growing a number of tasty specialty melons this year. These varieties are chosen for excellent flavor and texture.   The drawback is that they do not travel and store well. The result, is they can sometimes arrive to their destination broken, over ripe, or bad!  What to do? click here

Nice Napa

Napa cabbage, or Brasica campestris, is a Chinese cabbage featuring "celery-like" flavored leaves. This cabbage typically grows in the cooler weather into an oblong shape with tight, crinkly, light-green leaves. Napa is so low in calories that
it can be classified as a calorie-negative food, meaning that the calories your body uses to digest it are more than the calories in the cabbage itself. This veggie may be low in calories, but it's high in anti-oxidants, folates, Vitamins C and K, and minerals. To store this leafy green, simply keep it in a plastic bag with some air and keep it in the crisper drawer. If you're at a loss as far as what to do with the stuff, it's great in kimchi, salads, on sandwiches or burgers or tacos, in soups, stir fry, or as a lettuce...excuse us, cabbage, wrap. Friends of the Farm: Tess

Tess, a casual fine dining restaurant on Bartlett Ave. in Milwaukee, is one of LotfotL's many CSA drop sites. The restaurant opened its doors in September of 2002 with a seasonal menu featuring local meats and produce (including some veggies from right here at LotfotL). Menu items include dishes like house-made ravioli, blackened mahi mahi, and spiced pecan and goat cheese salad. Tess also features fine wines and craft beers as a nice compliment to this fresh menu. To finish off a great dinner their dessert menu features tasty dishes like a flourless chocolate cake with a Collectivo (another Milwaukee favorite) coffee custard. The restaurant also offers special event beer dinners and crawfish boils. Check out their website, Facebook, or visit them at 2499 N. Bartlett Ave in Milwaukee. Thanks for being a great friend of the farm, Tess!

The Dirt on the Farm:
Modern Farm "Wife" Cooking (Meals from our farm house kitchen using the food we grow)

Although, I am not a wife and my work is much different from the classic farm wife, I thought I would share some of the cooking tactics that I use to create our nightly meals here at the farm. The food that I have access to and the time that I have to use it are not always in what I think of as proper alignment.  Even if I could spend everyday, all day, in the kitchen, I would probably still have food projects on my wish list.  I have run myself ragged with ambitions of never needing a grocery store again. But, now days, I try to be realistic, and keep it simple and sweet (or in most cases, savory). Read more....
