Glorious Garlic

Garlic, apart of the Allium family with onions and leeks, is native to central Asia and has been grown for over 5000 years. This clove-filled veggie was an important part of Ancient Egyptian culture and was revered in India for its medical uses. Garlic's medicinal benefits include being anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral, so it has much better chances of warding of a cold than a vampire. To increase the health benefits offered by garlic, let chopped or crushed cloves sit on the counter for a minute or two before adding it to a dish.To store this pungent powerhouse, keep the bulbs in a cool dark place away from sunlight.

Friends of the Farm: Morel

Morel is a farm-to-table restaurant  located in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neighborhood. It's the brainchild of Chef Jonathan Manyo, a Wisconsin native. Jonathan wanted to shed light on the amazing food that's locally grown (including some of LotFotL's), raised, and produced in Wisconsin through a unique selection of menu items. Dishes include things like braised rabbit with mizuna and nectarine; beef cheek with kohlrabi, hedgehog mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, and bacon; and lamb with eggplant and lamb bacon. Stop down and experience the taste of Morel at 430 S. 2nd St. or visit their website or Facebook page. Thanks for being a friend of our farm, Morel!

The Dirt on the Farm:
Bugs of LotFotL

The changes in our insect populations this year are deeply curious. The scientist in all of us is led to try and explain phenomena like this right away. The snow pack, el nino, cool summer, all may have conspired to benefit the hover fly. I'd be lying if I said I believed any of this to be true though. Maybe the grand counsel of flying bugs had a powwow and simply voted the stilt flies to another farm for the year. We may never know why, but the what has implications on the farm and its crops, and fascinating ones at that.  Read More....
