Farm Store apples: Last weeks apples were a beautiful variety of many different heirlooms.  Here is a list of some of what folks found.  Expect another bag available for order starting this Friday for delivery on Thursday October 9th.

Fundamental Fennel

The fennel plant consists of a white or light green bulb with stalks containing feathery, green leaves and flowers containing seeds; every part of the plant is edible. The bulbs have a texture similar to celery, but a sweeter, licorice-like taste. The stalks are great additions to soups, stews, and stocks while the leaves make a wonderful herb seasoning. Fennel was revered in Ancient Roman and Greek cultures for its medicinal and culinary uses. In fact, Ancient Greek myth states that Prometheus stole fire from the gods at Olympus and delivered it to man in a fennel stalk. To store, keep fennel in the crisper drawer of the fridge, but use as soon as possible to ensure maximum flavor.  Here are 5 great recipes to use the tops/herb that you will be getting in your boxes this week.

Friends of the Farm: Hinterland

Hinterland Gastropub's chefs, Dan Van Rite and Dan Turek, take sustainable, delicious food seriously. So seriously, in fact, that they source seafood from Hololulu, Seattle, and Portland, Maine and get fresh deliveries as much as twice a day! They also reach out to local farmers, growers, and producers, like us at LotfotL, for the best produce, game, and foraged mushrooms they can get their hands on. Hinterland's menu thus changes with the seasons and is always updating. Visit them at 222 E. Erie St, Suite 100, in Milwaukee for dinner from 5-10 pm every night and happy hour from 5-7 pm (with weekday specials!). And for an extra-special dining experience, reserve the chef's table right next to the kitchen and enjoy a five to 12-course menu with dishes like veal heart tartare, wood-fire grilled octopus, and pan seared duck breast . Thanks for being a friend of the farm, Hinterland!
Organically Fed, Pasture Raised Turkeys

We're partnering up with Ney's Big Sky to bring flavorful, organically fed, pasture raised (weather permitting) turkeys to your Thanksgiving table this year. Whole, frozen birds will be between 11 to 12 lbs and cost $33 each. Orders are due by
October 7th.
