Week 3 (A week)
June 26th, 2014
Remember any biweekly deliveries have been divided into Groups A and B; make sure you know when your group starts
Let the veggies begin!

LotFotL in the Quick! Below are the highlights that we would like to make sure our members know about on the farm.

Delivery Details:  This weeks deliveries include:
  • Weekly Gonzo and Staple
  • "A week" Flipflop, Seesaw, Eggs and Chicken
  • Monthly "Chicken Group 1"

If your name is blackened out with a Sharpie marker it is not your week to pick up.
Each week I blacken out the members that are not picking up for the week.  If you see this on your name, then you should NOT be picking anything up.  Please do not take anything and call the farm if you have questions.

Drop Site Details: Most of our sites are set up to be self serve. Refer to "The Most Important Newsletter of the Year" to find out pick up details about your drop site.  If you have questions about the process, please call the farm.

Forgotten Shares: From time to time everyone can have a forgetful moment. Know that unclaimed food is not brought back to the farm, but is donated. Please set alarms and write notes to help yourself remember to pick up your share.  The farm is not in a position to replace forgotten shares.  You can also find your site's contact information on your account page. You may wish to call your drop site if you forget, sometimes you get lucky and your share can be saved.

Thank You!
This year LotfotL made a big change in their CSA management system. In years past we worked with a company called Farmigo to help with this work, but this year we have switched to a company called Small Farm Central.  I am sure that our long term customers have noticed some differences in the sign up process, their account pages, and the check lists at pick up sites.
With every change comes a learning curve and some mistakes.  We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding while we learn this new system.  If we make an oops on your account we would like to apologize in advance, but promise to make it right.
With this new system to manage our CSA, you will find your account page to be more straight forward and hopefully easier to read.  You will also be able to put your share on hold and schedule a make up share for a later date.

Thanks again for growing with us

Best Practice Tip for Members

  1. Call the farm right away if something is confusing or doesn't look right.

Missing or incorrect items can happen occasionally and we will work hard to make them right. As a community, we want to make sure we are always considering the entire group, so if something doesn't seem quite right, it is best to call the mother ship (aka the farm) as soon as possible. Attempting to solve a problem on your own or not telling anyone about it leads to other problems. Calling instead of emailing can often times get things remedied
quickly if not right away.  It can also prevent future or ongoing problems. Thank you for your support on this.

Mizuna Madness

Mizuna is a Japanese mustard green belonging to the Brassica family. It tastes similar to arugula, but has an added subtle earthiness, making it the perfect green for salads, soups, sandwiches, or stir fry. In Japan, pickling this green is common, but sometimes it's separated so the stems can be steeped in salt, sugar, and rice vinegar for a couple days then served as an appetizer and the leaves can be salted, chopped, and stirred into rice. Just one cup of mizuna can give a body half of the daily recommendation of Vitamin C and a third the daily recommendation of Vitamin A.

Help Keep Pick Up Sites Running Smoothly

It is important that who ever is picking up the CSA box knows what size bin to take and knows to look for and use the check list at the site. Remember if your name is not on the list (or is crossed out with black sharpie) then we did not send anything for you this week.

Enjoy your farm fresh, local food. Please call the farm if you have any questions or concerns. 920-318-3800

Help Wanted at LotFotL

We are looking to hire more folks on the farm to help with harvest and weeding. We have both full and part time work available.  We are also still accepting worker shares this year.  Working on the farm can be rewarding work with potential to build new skills and grow your professional and social network. Applicants must be able to do physical labor in the fields and be willing to work in all weather.

Resumes and cover letters can be emailed to [email protected].

The Dirt on the Farm!

The yearly calendar just marked Summer Solstice on Saturday. This season didn't seem to build up to the long hot days that often time precede the longest day of the year.  The farm though, seems to be full of life, both wanted and unwanted, with the weeds loving all this rain most of all!  The 25 pigs are a mighty project that will up the challenge for farmer Tim. April's bee sanctuary has grown, and with a little luck will keep the members and South Shore Farm market goers supplied with honey this fall.  And the crew is an off the charts rock star group this year that is really making things happen.
