WEEK 6 SOFTBALL RANKINGS
By Kyle Sandy

Three new teams take over No. 1

What a week it was. Three new teams take over the No. 1 spot in their respective classification after a topsy-turvy week shakes the state rankings.

In Class AAAAAAA, defending state champion Mill Creek has officially hit its grove and replaces North Gwinnett at No. 1. Over the past week, the Hawks ran up wins over No. 6 Lambert (8-3), AAAA No. 6 Ridgeland (4-0) and on Tuesday, knocked North Gwinnett off its perch to No. 2 with a 5-4 victory. The Bulldogs had a great week as well before the loss to Mill Creek, earning wins over ranked opponents Harris County and Ridgeland. No. 3 Lassiter sinks a spot after Cherokee, who remerges in the top 10 at No. 4, beat the Trojans 9-7. The Warriors also picked up a county victory against Class AAAAAA No. 8 River Ridge, 9-3.

Everyone in last week's top ten in Class AAAAAA suffered a loss except for No. 9 Mundy's Mill who continues to steam roll through the competition. The top three remains the same however. No. 1 Cambridge dropped its first game of the season to No. 3 Pope, 5-4, but the Greyhounds couldn't keep their momentum and were upset by Dunwoody 3-0, holding them at No. 3. No. 2 Creekview suffered a 3-0 loss against AAAAA No. 4 Walnut Grove. River Ridge slides four spots after losses to Cherokee and Harrison. The Knights have rebounded with wins over South Cobb and Allatoona, but now host Senior Night tonight against Cambridge. Dalton swaps places with River Ridge and takes over No. 4. The Catamounts are now 14-6 and picked up a win over ranked opponent Heritage-Catoosa, 2-1. Another Region 6 team is knocking on the door of reentering the poll with Harrison riding a five-game winning streak at 13-8. They wrap up their season at No. 4 Dalton and host No. 2 Creekview. No. 5 Lee County skyrockets back into the rankings thanks to six straight wins and a 17-6 record. The Trojans stopped No. 6 Houston County 4-3.

No. 1 Buford is starting to distance itself from the pack in AAAAA, but No. 2 Whitewater is red-hot with eight straight wins. Walnut Grove slips to No. 4 after losses to Banks County and AA No. 1 Vidalia. After a meteoric rise to No. 3, Harris County is now reeling, losing three of four. North Gwinnett, Mountain View and South Forsyth send the Tigers to No. 7. Region 4 sees a new representative at No. 10 after Union Grove knocked off Jones County 8-1 and dropped the Greyhounds out of the poll.

Northside-Columbus beat rival No. 10 Columbus 2-1 in eight innings, but it wasn't enough to keep the Patriots from relinquishing their grasp of No. 1 in Class AAAA as Marist now holds the top spot. The War Eagles' quality wins can't be overlooked with four straight wins over ranked opponents, beating Westminster (10-1), Dalton (2-0), No. 9 Northwest Whitfield (5-4) and No. 7 Heritage-Catoosa 3-2 in eight innings. Speaking of Northwest Whitfield, the Bruins host a major Region 6 clash on Thursday as No. 6 Ridgeland comes to town. The highest riser in the classification is No. 4 Jefferson. The Dragons jump six spots after wins over Archer, Harlem and No. 5 Stephens County.

Lovett leaps seven spots to No. 2 in Class AAA after 6-2 win over No. 5 Westminster. Ringgold boosted its stock as well, slotting in at No. 6 after being unranked last week. The Tigers beat Class A-Private power Wesleyan 5-2. Sliding teams No. 9 East Jackson and Franklin County meet on Thursday at East Jackson. The Eagles fall five spots while the Lions drop all the way out of the poll after the two teams have combined for five straight losses.

AA No. 1 Vidalia beat Walnut Grove 3-0 and No. 9 Bacon County 14-5. Heard County is making a move, now sitting at No. 5.

First Presbyterian Day claims the top ranking in Class A-Private after No. 2 Wesleyan suffered losses to A-Public No. 1 Gordon Lee 8-0 and Ringgold. No. 3 Tattnall Square Academy beat No. 4 Stratford Academy for a second time, 9-1, but was upended by Stephens County. No. 9 Athens Christian and No. 10 Brookstone replace Providence Christian and Galloway.

Wilcox County has made some noise over the past week and sees itself ranked No. 7 in Class A-Public after shutting out both Bleckley County and Lanier County.

CLASS AAAA OUTLOOK
By Craig Sager II

A dozen region games highlight Week 6 slate

Region 1 enters its second weekend of region games and three other regions open up conference play this week while the other half of the classification waits one last Friday. In total, 12 region games highlight the Week 6 slate.
In Region 1's four Week 6 matchups, every matchup features a team that won its region debut against a team that will look to avoid an 0-2 region start. On Thursday, Americus-Sumter (2-2, 1-0) faces Northside-Columbus (2-2, 0-1), Cairo (3-1, 1-0) squares off with Shaw (1-3, 0-1) and Carver-Columbus (2-2, 1-0) faces Westover (2-2, 0-1). Finally, Columbus (2-2, 1-0) will take on Hardaway (2-1, 0-1) on Friday, fresh off its first win over rival Shaw in 22 years.

In Region 4, Henry County and Luella are on a bye. Eastside opened the season with a 23-0 win over Luella that marked the first region game in the state. As a result of its region opener, the Eagles will face undefeated Oconee County out of Region 8 in one last non-region matchup while the rest of the region gets underway with a pair of games. Druid Hills (2-2) faces North Clayton (2-2) and Salem (3-1) visits No. 2 Woodward Academy (3-1), which comes off a 32-0 blowout over Marist.

In Region 5, Sandy Creek is off this week, which will stage three total games in this seven-team region. No. 1 Cartersville (4-0) will visit 3-1 Cedartown, LaGrange (1-3) travels to Central-Carroll (0-4) and Chapel Hill (2-1-1) clashes with Troup (3-1). This will mark the first meeting in school history for Troup and Chapel Hill. Central-Carroll is 0-6 all-time against LaGrange, and after winning 30 combined games over the last three seasons, the Lions are still looking for their first win of 2016 under first-year head coach Larry Kesler. Cartersville trails Cedartown 16-24-2 in their all-time series and this will be the Purple Hurricanes' first meeting with Cedartown since an 18-10 loss in 2011.
Like Sandy Creek in Region 5, Pickens will watch as the rest of seven-team Region 6 gets underway. Winless Gilmer (0-4) faces host Heritage-Catoosa (3-1), Southeast Whitfield (3-1) visits LaFayette (2-2) and Northwest Whitfield (2-2) goes to undefeated Ridgeland (3-0) to face the red-hot Panthers. Northwest Whitfield has won seven of its last eight meetings with Ridgeland and 14 of the 17 all-time meetings. This year's Ridgeland team, however, is off to 3-0 start for the first time since 2007 and is averaging more than 45 points per game, while allowing just 14 points per game defensively.
