Eh...What's Up Doc?

Carrots, from the Greek karoton, were first cultivated in central Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe prior to the 15th and 16th centuries. When this root vegetable was first cultivated, it was more common to see red, purple, and yellow varieties than the orange that is popular today. The antioxidants in carrots have a range of health benefits including cardiovascular health, eye health, and colon health. Just one cup of raw carrot contains 113% of the daily recommended Vitamin A, as well as biotin, Vitamin K, fiber, potassium, and Vitamin B6. To
store, wrap in plastic or a paper towel (to reduce the amount of condensation that's able to form) and keep in the coolest part of the fridge away from fruits that produce ethylene gas (apples, pears, potatoes, etc); carrots stored in this manner should keep for about two weeks.
Friends of the Farm: Wild Flour Bakery

Wild Flour Bakery, one of our many drop sites, was created over 13 years ago by owners Dolly, Greg, and Josh, who wanted to bring traditional European breads to the Milwaukee area. Why European? After researching the healthiest breads, Dolly discovered that European style breads don't contain any fats or oils, sugar, eggs, dairy, or preservatives, making them healthier than conventionally baked, American breads. In addition to this style of bread, Wild Flour offers a variety of specialty breads including cranberry walnut and olive rosemary. But wait, there's more! Wild Flour also offers delicious pastries, muffins, sweet breads, brownies, cookies, and even pies. If you're not in the mood for something sweet, you can also pick up a salad, soup, or sandwich made on one of their freshly baked breads. The bakery has three locations in Milwaukee: on W. Lincoln Ave, E. Lincoln Ave in Bay View, and W. Wisconsin Ave; and one in East Troy on County Road ES. Stop in and get some freshly baked goodies today or order online. Thanks for being a great friend of the farm, Wild Flour!

Organic Certification

We're proud to announce that the majority of the land our crops are grown on are now certified organic by the Midwest Organic Services Association, a USDA
accredited certifying agency. As our farm expands, we will be using land that is not yet certified, but
all of our growing practices will still use organic standards. An asterisk (*) will be used to identify any non-certified crops in the "What's in the Box?" section. This year you will notice that potatoes, winter squash, and garlic are not yet certified. In the future, we'll continue to work toward further certification of our land and crops.

Partner Shares Program Donation Drive from July 21 through Aug. 8.

Did you know? 15.9% of Americans experience food insecurity. This means that 48,966,000 people do not have consistent access to enough food to support a healthy, active life for all household members. Of these individuals, 3,136,250 live in the states that FairShare CSA Coalition serves. These are people living in your communities and your neighborhoods. LotFotL Community Farm is proud to be a part of FairShare CSA Coalition and is active with the partner shares program. Please consider a donation to help.

The Dirt on the Farm: Just Another Day, Right?

LotFotL was started in 2007 and the CSA was born in 2008.  In that time the farm has grown every year. Currently, we have over 500 CSA members, we maintain an online farm store that sells items like local and sustainable meat, fruit, and honey, we are raising 26 heritage breed pigs and maintaining over a dozen honeybee hives.  The farm employs more than a dozen people and welcomes over 30 worker share volunteers.  In that time we have learned to take things in stride.  Tractors break, people get sick or quit, animals fall ill, drought leaves things withered and dead, flood washes things out, and pests decimate a crop.  Each year we seem to mentally get better and better at taking what comes and not letting it give us panic attacks. So last week, when Tim called the farm to let us know he needed to be rescued from his attempted cherry pick up because the right rear wheels of the cube van fell off while he was driving down the highway....well, we just made the adjustments and got Tim home safe and the cherries too.
