Sky Sox Q & A: Andrew Brown

Outfielder is Triple-A RBI Leader in May

After not having an impressive first month of the season, Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown has been one of the most prolific hitters in the Pacific Coast League during the month of May. Brown leads all Triple-A hitters with 32 RBI, as of May 28, and leads the Sky Sox in home runs with six, with three homers in the last week.

Brown has been an extra-base hit machine for Colorado Springs, totaling a team-high 24 this season, 18 in during this month, and has the most doubles (15) and triples (3) on the team to go along with his team-leading homer total. Brown has also totaled a team-high 28 hits this month, and has raised his batting average nearly one hundred points in the last 30 days (.175 to .258).

Brown, who played his first five professional seasons within the St. Louis Cardinals organization, was a PCL Midseason All-Star for the Memphis Redbirds last season totaling 14 homers and 45 RBI prior to the All-Star Break in 2011. The outfielder has totaled more than 20 home runs in three of his last four seasons, and made his Major League debut with the Cardinals last season appearing in 11 games for St. Louis.

Brown sat down to discuss his monstrous month of May, his homecoming to Memphis which included a grand slam as well as how the birth of his first child (and the timing of that birth) has affected his mindset as a player.

Andrew Mitchell: You had a relatively slow start to the season, but this month you have really been swinging a hot bat. Have you made any changes to your approach or is that just the way baseball goes?

Andrew Brown: I think it is a little bit of both. I made some changes in my approach to hitting, changing the hands position and improved my timing a bit. But I got to see my family and resolved all of my off the field issues and everything has come around now that I get to have my family with me. Once all the pieces start to come together life gets a little easier and better. When you're worried about your wife taking care of your newborn baby by herself and baseball not going the way it should at the same time, it just takes one being resolved to counteract the other to get everything where it needs to be which is a beautiful thing.
