Greetings!
The Beaverton Chamber is growing entrepreneurs - right here, right now!
YEA! students are in need of mentors for 7 weeks on Tuesday evening 5:30-7pm at Beaverton High School starting this upcoming Tuesday. Out of 14 students we have 10 businesses and 3 of those are partnerships. Each business is assigned a mentor. Here is what a mentor will be doing:
BUSINESS MENTORS NEEDED!
Mentors work with Young Entrepreneurs Academy student businesses to assist in the creation of their business plans. For seven weeks, mentors provide guidance and feedback as students think through all aspects of their business creation, write their business plans, and prepare their Investor Panel presentations.
Mentors commit to 7 weeks of 90 minutes per week from 5:30pm to 7pm, with continued out-of-class support through email and phone.
Mentor goals and expected outcomes
* Assist students in thinking through all aspects of business plan
* Provide guidance and feedback as students conceptualize ideas
* Keep students on track and help them meet timelines
* Review business plans and make edits, changes, and suggestions
* Review PowerPoint presentations and make edits, changes, and suggestions
* Compare PowerPoint presentations and business plans for consistency
* Connect students with other business professionals
We meet on Tuesday's at 4-7pm at the Beaverton High School, however the actual mentor time is towards the end of the class 5:30 -7pm. We have an instructor and a program manager. Please email me if you are interested, able and invested in seeing entrepreneurism shine!
On another quick note - if you are not reading Michelle's Membership Corner below - you are missing out! Especially if you are looking for new people to meet and do business with. She is going above and beyond to connect you to new people, new places and new fun!
Finish your week strongly and productively.
Sincerely,
Lorraine Clarno, President/CEO, ACE Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce 503.350.2006

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center -
Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. TheChamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.
As additional resource for small businesses in Beaverton, owners and entrepreneurs can schedule an appointment for SBDC advising and conveniently meet at the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce. Candidates for advising may need help in business start-up, marketing, planning, financing, loan package development and more. On-the-Job Training Reimbursements Available for Local Businesses
WorkSource Centers are currently offering reimbursements to support local businesses for providing On-the-Job Training (OJT) to their newly-hired employees. Through state and federal grants (via WorkSystems, Inc.), WorkSource is able to reimburse companies up to 50% of the wages for their new hires during the training period.
Hundreds of small and medium-sized companies throughout Washington and Multnomah Counties have utilized the OJT Program over the past few years to train and keep skilled, productive workers. This program has proven to be a very cost-effective way to develop talent for businesses that require unique or niche skill sets. It also benefits the economy by helping job seekers who may be otherwise highly-qualified for a job but for the lack of a couple of missing skills. Examples of successful OJT's in Washington County this past year have included a wide range of skilled occupations, such as warehouse workers, bookkeepers, field service technicians, electronics technicians, and software developers.
For more information about the OJT Program or to see if your business is eligible, contact your local WorkSource Center. Businesses located in Washington County, call 503-526-2712 (Alicia) or 503-612-4214 (Bryan). Businesses in Multnomah County, call 503-280-6633 (Rhonda) or 503-669-7112, ext. 250 (Miriam).

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
NEXT MEETING: **February 6th, 2014. 7:30 - 8:30am
**Special Meeting and Tour of the Beaverton Police Department at Griffith Drive. Please contact Lorraine in advance if you'd like to join the council on this informational tour. You will need to complete a form in advance.
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.
