Ongoing Events and Entertainment
Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6pm. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse. 

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6pm. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473

Shop Sparta

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee every Wednesday from 8:30-11am. All veterans are invited to attend.  Click to learn more .
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10am-2pm, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 US Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Tickets for the 8th Annual Empty Bowls on April 10, 2017 are available for sale now at the Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $30 each and all proceeds go to the Children's Feeding Program. 
Upcoming WCC- Alleghany Center Classes 
  • Gunsmithing II: starting on Monday, March 6th- May 1st 2017. Classes are Monday evenings from 5:30-8:30 pm.  The cost of the class is $70.
  • Spanish in the Workplace: starting on Wednesday March 22nd-May 10th 2017.  Classes are Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 pm.  The cost of the class is $70.
  • Photoshop: starts on Tuesday, March 14th-May 2nd 2017.  Classes are each Tuesday night from 6:00-9:00 pm.  The cost of the class is $70.

Volunteer Work Day at New River State Park

This is a great opportunity for high school students to get the volunteer hours needed for graduation and those that love to help out your state parks. Come and join a ranger at New River State Park on March 25 and 26 at 9 am and learn how to maintain the trails here at the 221 access. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes. Dress for the weather. 336-982-2587.
Project Wild Workshop

Project WILD workshops are for adults interested in teaching young people about wildlife. Participants receive the Project WILD K-12 educator guide along with materials specifically about North Carolina wildlife. The educator guide contains more than 150 hands-on activities that focus on wildlife and natural resources. Please come dressed for the weather as the entire workshop will be held outdoors. This workshop will be at Stone Mountain State Park on March 22 from 10 am until 4 pm. The six hour workshop can can count towards Criteria I, II or Continuing Education credit for the NC EE Certification Program. Rummage Sale

A Rummage Sale to benefit Blue Ridge Developmental Day and Alleghany Wellness Center is planned for Thursday-Sunday, March 23-26 at the Emerson Black Building at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds. Household items, holiday decorations, small appliances, linens, kids clothing, adult clothing and accessories, toys, garden items and much, much more!

Blood Drive 

The Sparta Lions Club will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood drive on Monday, March 27, from 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM. The blood drive will be l ocated at the Sparta United Methodist Church.
This is for the Birds!
Bring you binoculars and join a Ranger to see what we can on this short, and easy hike along the river at New River State Park on Wednesday, March 15, at 2 PM. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes, dress according to the weather for the day and bring water.

Flight of the American Woodcock

Witness the amazing courtship flight of the American Woodcock. Also learn about its life history, and some cool facts about this unique woodland shore bird that is rarely seen. Meet at New River State Park's Visitor Center at Hwy. 221 access on Saturday, March 18 for a short slide show and then the main attraction. Program starts at 7:00 pm. Be prepared to spend at least 20 minutes outside in the cold air and dark skies.

100 Mile Challenge 

Need to add a few miles to your log? Join
 a State
Ranger at the Visitor Center off of Highway 221 in the New River State Park for a 2.4 mile hike on Friday, March 24 at 2 pm. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes, and bring a water bottle.
