Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6pm. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast

The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee every Wednesday from 8:30-11am. All veterans are invited to attend.  Click to learn more .

Whitehead Community Building Annual Spring

Whitehead Community Building in Whitehead is having their Annual
  Spring Fundraiser on Friday, March 31, starting at 5 PM. They will have hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and desserts
 available for purchase. At 6 PM there will be Bluegrass music, auction, and a cake walk. At 8 PM they will be raffling off a beautiful handmade quilt. The quilt can be seen at the Barber Shop on Main St. and raffle tickets are available at this location as well. Learn to Waltz! Free! And You don't Need A Partner!

Kelly and Brenda Weems will teach the Waltz dancing on Tuesday, March 28 at the Alleghany Jubilee in Sparta from 5:45 PM until 6:45 PM. Brenda and Kelly are Jubilee regulars who have been dancing together for 54 years.
Lessons will continue on subsequent Tuesdays (still free!) if people are interested. Don't miss out on a great opportunity! 
Volunteer Work Day at New River State Park

This is a great opportunity for high school students to get the volunteer hours needed for graduation and those that love to help out your state parks. Come and join a ranger at New River State Park on March 25 and 26 at 9 am and learn how to maintain the trails here at the 221 access. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes. Project Wild Workshop


Project WILD workshops are for adults interested in teaching young people about wildlife. Participants receive the Project WILD K-12 educator guide along with materials specifically about North Carolina wildlife. The educator guide contains more than 150 hands-on activities that focus on wildlife and natural resources. Please come dressed for the weather as the entire workshop will be held outdoors. This workshop will be at Stone Mountain State Park on March 22 from 10 am until 4 pm. The six hour workshop can can count towards Criteria I, II or Continuing Education credit for the NC EE Certification Program. A Rummage Sale to benefit Blue Ridge Developmental Day and Alleghany Wellness Center is planned for Thursday-Sunday, March 23-26 at the Emerson Black Building at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds. The Sparta Lions Club will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood drive on Monday, March 27, from 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM. The blood drive will be l ocated at the Sparta United Methodist Church.

Bring you binoculars and join a Ranger to see what we can on this short, and easy hike along the river at New River State Park on Wednesday, March 15, at 2 PM. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes, dress according to the weather for the day and bring water.

Flight of the American Woodcock

Witness the amazing courtship flight of the American Woodcock. Also learn about its life history, and some cool facts about this unique woodland shore bird that is rarely seen. Meet at New River State Park's Visitor Center at Hwy. 221 access on Saturday, March 18 for a short slide show and then the main attraction. Program starts at 7:00 pm. Be prepared to spend at least 20 minutes outside in the cold air and dark skies.

Chicken & Pork BBQ

Alleghany County Rescue Squad is
